Oil around coil packs.

So i've just taken the plastic engine cover off (n52 engine) and noticed a pool of oil around the coil packs. Any thoughts?

Also there was a loose rubber washer which wasn't attached to anything in the pool. There are some bloody crap mechanics / DIY ers around!!
 
Sorry, must disagree there. It would be the valvetronic gasket. Had the very same thing happen to me. Is the pooling between the coil packs in the vicinity of the valvetronic motor?
 
yeah I believe so. Doesn't look like it's around all of the coil packs. just a couple of them.

Is it likely to have done damage to anything else? i'm currently sorting the solenoids when I spotted this!!
 
If it's on top of the cam cover, then it'll be either the valvetronic motor gasket or the seal on the eccentric shaft sensor plug. If the oil is at the bottom of of the coil packs, ie around the plugs themselves, then it'll be the inner of the two cam cover gaskets and you'll need to replace both as well as all of the bolts of its the six cyl. Bolt replacement not required on the 4 cyl.

I just replaced mine a few weeks ago.

Mop up the oil from all the valleys around the coil packs, then remove the coils and see if there is any oil at the base of the shaft. If not, I'd think it's the valvetronic gasket. It's not too expensive to buy. Pelican parts does a good tutorial, as do a few youtubers. Check your sensor as Mike (Ducklakeview) mentions as well. It just sounds exactly like my problem. When you do your research, and come to a conclusion, let me know. There's a particular method to removing the valvetronic motor. I also recommend using hylomar blue as an insurance.

Is it OK to drive? I guess if it's not spewing out oil, then it'll be OK. You may need to do a bit of a top-up just to be sure.

Right I took a couple of the coil packs out to see if there was oil inside the hole. They look clean inside, couldn't see any oil in there so I don't think it's the gasket between the head cover and the rest of the engine block (also I have a metal head cover and gasket in case that matters). So i'm assuming that Z4c_er is probably correct as I can see a bit of oil dripping from the motor gasket above the coil packs.

Oh, and the torque settings I settled on were 9Nm for the main bolts and 4-5Nm for the outer torx head screws. And as mentioned I added Hylomar Blue. Make sure you read the directions.
 
Yeah my mistake that's what I meant. Haven't quite picked up the names of everything yet.

It's fairly straightforward, and depending on the hourly rate, (and should certainly take less than an hour) should be that plus parts. ...And I think your gasket is different to mine then. I have the plastic rocker cover.
