Oh no! "Your roof's fixed, sir!"

You have to laugh sometimes.
The dreaded roof motor failed this week, so after my local independent quoted me "£1000-£1200" over the phone, I thought I would try with Cooper BMW Boldon, just down the road. Showed them a copy of the bulletin, and they agreed to "discount" the price to £667 inc. VAT. I had thought about doing it myself a-la-Shipkiller, but it seemed so reasonable, why bother? So the car went in yesterday morning, followed by a call to say they "hadn't included the cover and loom", which I had discussed with them when booking it in, -another £110, :o

So anyway, they said the car would be ready tonight. I just had a call "er, your car is all put back together so you can take it away if you want, BUT "er, we forgot to prime the pump with oil, so we'll need to take out the roof again" (They did admit "they hadn't done one before" - can't be that common, then?)

In a word, NUMPTIES!

As luck would have it I don't need the car over the weekend, and can see the funny side, but this isn't what you expect from a main dealer. I would have viewed things differently if it was my only car, I suppose.

So, am I justified in demanding they don't charge me for the £110 for the cover, when it was supposed to be included in the first place? When I booked the car in, we discussed it clearly, about the cover being redesigned so as not to let in (so much) water.

What would you do?

EDIT - Moved to Dealer Feedback. AlanJ

try it, what do you have to lose

make sure you mention the inconvenience of being without your car for longer and they could atleast meet you half way :)

Well there's no harm in asking is there and you have a good argument, good luck

I think that the problem is you seem to have accepted this increased charge once already when you should have insisted not to pay it.
Now if it is removed, it will just be goodwill for the mistake, rather than being seen as charge you shouldnt have had in the first place.

The motor/pump does NOT need to be primed... It is self priming.......

If they tell you it needs it, ask them to show you where it states that in the TIS.

Good point Shipkiller, I thought I had read that somewhere on here before, what they mean is they forgot to fill the reservoir with oil! I hope they haven't damaged the pump by running it dry? I wish I'd followed your guide and done it myself now, but of course it had to happen right at the END of 2 weeks off work, Sod's Law! :(

Thanks for the advice guys, let's see what they say on Monday. My girlfriend will have to collect the car as I'm away until Thursday, -not ideal I know, but she's a tough cookie. I'll tell her not to take any sh*t.

The pump comes pre-filled with the proper amount. The amount of loss when you transfer the four hydraulic lines (if you are quick) is approx. four or five drops.
It is also stated in the BMW TIS that the pump is self-priming.

Thanks for the info Shipkiller, above was what the guy on the desk said, but I guess they don't really have a clue. The car is still reassembled and roof not working at the moment, they start the stripdown tomorrow. As luck would have it I'm away until the end of the week, so no chance to get to the dealers in person until then. They will (hopefully) call me later tomorrow, so I can point this out, thanks for your information.

I'll post up here again as soon as I get any more news, thanks for your interest.

Update:

Got back home to find they wouldn't budge re the original verbal quote of £667 and wouldn't hand back the car until my girlfriend stumped up £793.
Called in to collect the bits so I could have "proof of failure mode", "we can't find them right now, we'll get back to you tomorrow"
(I had specifically called in last Saturday to tell them not to throw the bits away). You guessed, no call back.
I told them if they can't find the bits, I want a letter confirming mode of failure, (but TBH am I wasting my time, the car is 2003, despite less than 19K miles/always garaged/drains not found to be blocked?). Verbally, they agreed it was due to water ingress.
Apparently the problem with the replacement motor was the reservoir was only 1/3 full to start with, BUT they charged me 16.99 for the oil to refill it!
(Shipkiller says it comes pre-filled, right?)
The guy I was dealing with was off today, so I have to wait until Monday now! :x
Car was returned unwashed with grubby roof (went in immaculate), (for which they apologised and offered to valet to be fair).

Bill breakdown: (For information)

And in related news, my cheque for £280 for the part cost has arrived following my goodwill claim. Car is 2005 with 65K on the clock.

Keep on at them (feel free to use me as ammo) and especially ask them to show you the sound insulation so that you can see what was wrong with it, outrageous they changed that when it probably just needed drying out overnight like mine!!
