3' plus snow on the ground. Stuck in the house with no motorised transport for 5 days. Minus 8 deg C outside.

And now we have no electricity.

No electricity means no heating...

2 hrs later and I'm really starting to get pissed off...

iPhone meh, Android on my Samsung Galaxy all the way!

Anyway, starting to get cold so me and the missus have thought of another way to keep warm, so goodnight...

We had a power cut Tuesday night, same amount of snow and like you have not been able to move any of the cars. Me, Mrs and the Kids just lit lots of candles got wrapped in a duvet each and played Monopoly and I spy by candle light.

Ya didn't hear me bitching about it, suck it up and toughen up a soft Central wimp :poke: :poke:

Pah, I'm just a lot younger than some of you lot and can't remember the hard old days :poke:

Power was restored sometime during the night but heating didn't restart so it was somewhay chilly in the house this morning. Minus 8degC outside but FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 6 DAYS NO MORE SNOW FELL OVERNIGHT :yeah:

And with all good married couples, the powercut was your fault - right? :)

Its going to get worse wait for the thaw then all the powerlines that are heavy with snow will clash and blow fuses.

Everyone stock up on candles.

We don't blame each other for many things. Well, not that I'm aware of as I just don't tend to listen to her too much :D

What rubbish! :P

The thaw will reduce the amount of ice accretion on the conductors and they will return to normal sag.
Also, there is unlikely to be any clashing of conductors without wind.
Further - fuses are not a popular form of protection on HV overhead lines - automatic sectionalisers backed up by reclosing circuit breakers are a more reliable form of protection. Fuses are fitted to LV overhead lines but the numbers of customers affected is usually quite low.

Take it you work with me at SSE? The lines will clash I can assure you. It keeps me busy every year.

Ah I see where you're coming from now.
Depends which part of the country you are in - I know some areas were pretty lax with maintenance and wouldn't spend money on refurbishment.
You probably do still have lots of spurs protected by fuses and lots of lines out of sag.

I am ex SSE after 37 years service.

I was working until midnight last night on an emergency call out covering powercut calls for some of the main networks in the South.

Oh how I wish I could make this suggestion to some of the customers

Seriously though, people respond very strangely to powercuts, one person was concerned at 9pm that the power may not come on and were wondering whether it was worth keeping the kids up until it came back on or if they should just put them to bed. Am I missing something? Is there some reason why it would be beneficial to keep the kids awake past their bed time just because there's no power?

Arghh!!!!!
