Oh dear another window problem

Went out for drive today in the sun, roof went down and windows left where they finish halfway down. All good so far. Bit chilly so wife put her window up and I tried to do mine, pulling on the switch makes the window go down, pushing down on the switch also makes the window go down. Nothing makes the window go up apart from closing the roof. Opening the roof and the window stops where it should, halfway down. But still doesn't work properly from the switch. Any ideas please. Thank you. Mike.

Worth opening the switch to check its cleanliness

They get very gummed up

The switches aren’t hard to open but are guaranteed to go ‘ping’ when you do and finding the bits and putting them back in the right places can be a fun half hour!

I’m a bit confused as the windows should complete the cycle and return to fully closed when the roof is down? They shouldn’t park in the ‘semi-lowered’ position…. Maybe I’m misinterpreting what you’ve said :?

Good luck..

I have same issue on my newly purchased 2004. From driver's side door I can only lower the passenger window regardless of whether I push or pull on switch...passenger switch controls passenger window perfectly. Which means I need to lean over and raise window from passenger side. When I raise or lower the roof, both windows cycle as they should. Only issue is from driver's door switch.

I replaced: driver's switch (with new), passenger switch (with used ebay find) and the GM5 (used ebay find) - issue persists.

It seems to depend on how you open the roof, from the remote mine stop half way. From inside the car, they go all the way back up.

Oh, ok. I’ve only used the remote with cars fitted with a GapTech and they go all the way back up using that… every day’s a school day

Thank you bigwinn, I'll leave that as a last resort

I usually stop at halfway. Gonna try going all the way now, see if that resets it. Q Pondrew

There is a window reset procedure, I’d try that… search the forum for it and it’ll come up.

IIRC it’s something like holding the button on open for 10 seconds after window is fully open… only problem is I think there’s also a need to hold the button in the closed position for 10 seconds :?

I've just tried going through the whole roof cycle with windows fully shut but the switch still only makes the window go down :headbang: I can hear a little click when I operate the switch both ways. All is not lost at least I can still close and open the window

How easy is it to remove the switch from the door?

Switch is very simple to remove/replace - it help if you have a thin, plastic trim removal tool.

Instructions here: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/BMW_Z4M/50-INTERIOR-Power_Window_switch_Replacement/50-INTERIOR-Power_Window_switch_Replacement.htm

Well, tried the battery disconnected re connect, didn’t work so next will be switch off and take apart. Oddly someone’s Z3 on another forum has the same problem and changing over the switch didn’t work.

sounds like the door switch.

my coupe was having window issues where driver side would sometimes work. Most of the time going down worked then would get stuck down and polarity of the switch would go wrong. try to put window up and it went down untill it maxed out and would take 20 minutes of button spamming to come back up.

Window reset did nothing etc.

can remove switch easily enough and take apart. theres a youtube video if you search z4 window switch. theres not much to see in the switch unless you get down to the board which was above my testing.

If your replacing the switch, you can swap out the cover plate so you can buy a grey one etc from ebay and put your black buttons/trim on and vice versa

Yes thank you, decided to take the switch apart as Bigwinn suggested, what a faff, lots of little clips that all need releasing at same time, Stanley blades work a treat. Bits fly everywhere :headbang: Anyway the board inside had areas of coffee on it so cleaned up with water and cotton buds. Put it all back together and it works    saved me £80.00 odd for a new one. more careful on my Costa run from now on

:D The Little black bits fit in the switch into little sliders but must face down otherwise the switches don't work. I'd forgotten how satisfying these little jobs can be.
