Interesting stuff. The bottom line is that the law is the law, and we should all abide by it, but if the police are running a "fundraiser" as one poster called it (made me laugh), it seems that they are using the law in the wrong way. In my case yesterday I was 50% over the limit, so I accept my fate gracefully. But while I was being processed they were pulling 'em in one after another, some for being only a few km/h over the limit (one girl got busted for going 46 km/h in a 40 zone). I thought that was a bit odd. The stretch they had the radar set up on was downhill too. It's so easy to get a few km/h over if you're not paying strict attention to the speedo at all times.

Another question: are radar detectors legal where you guys are at? They are here, and I have resolved to get one. Not because I intend to speed, but because it will nudge me to check my speed and possibly slow down in time to avoid more fines and points if I'm going a bit over.

Radar detectors are illegal in the UK. Laser detectors are fine... But from what I've heard if the alarm goes off it's generally just telling you that you've been busted :roll:

This is interesting. On the Wikipedia page, below, is a list of countries where radar detectors are and are not legal. Apparently they're illegal in more countries than they're legal in. And then you have countries like Germany, where they're legal to own but illegal to use in a vehicle. Japan is one of the few countries where they are quite legal to own and use in a vehicle. Most of the ones available nowadays include GPS capability, and will tell you where the permanent speed cameras are as well as warn you of locations where the police frequency set up traps. Beats me why they're legal, but they are.

I've been done twice, 91 mph on the M18 at 02:00 in the morning, we were the only two cars on the motorway and 46 in a 40 mph on a Saturday morning by a mobile.

I wouldn't buy a car without cruise control now, it makes driving a lot less stressful, especially on those roads covered by an average speed camera. Talking of which on Sunday had to laugh, guy breaking hard at every camera and then speeding up to 70 again after, hilarious

I thought detectors are legal, but jammers are illegal?

Detectors are legal in the UK. Radar is not used anymore so you are wasting your time there.

Laser detectors - don't see the point as there is very little scatter to pick up, and if you get hit - too late anyway.

Ashame they use the public available 904 Nm band as that means that any device using the same band can not be prohibitted, even worse if it heaven forbid might interfere with that

I see this all the time on the M25/M1. I can't believe so many people are so stupid. Demonstration that illiteracy is indeed on the rise in the UK

I have a lidatek laser jammer, doubles as a garage door opener too. No illegal to own but illegal to use to pervert the course of justice. So they have to prove your were intending to speed and avoid a ticket. Law getting tighter all the time. Not currently connected and only ever pinged twice both with a camera van visible.

The way I see it now (speaking as if I'm an old man), excessive speed is not worth the risk. I'm just as happy cruising (with the roof down ) at 70mph as I would be at 90mph.

+1 but it is nice to press on where it's safe. Road legislation hasn't kept up with cars. We should adopt the german system of both speed limits and variable fines. Unfortunately the grabbing fcukers in power don't want to do anything to stop us filling the trough they all have their snouts in.

Nissan active cruise control happens to use that frequency (or did)

Got done once on the M27 for doing 101.6 mph many years ago. I remember getting points and a fine but can't recall exactly what now, I was cr@pping myself as I was a Service Engineer at the time wouldn't have been able to get to work if I'd been banned.
Got stopped just outside Guilford one day on my motorbike, I'd only had it a couple of days and it wasn't in the system yet and the copper who stopped us told us to stick to 30mph limits but coudn't care less what we got upto in the national speed limit areas, I've always tried to stick to that every since.
But as Adamski says these days I'm not in great rush to get anywhere so quite content to plod along until the road gets interesting where my driving sometimes gets enthusiastic within the confines of the given limit.
