Official Quad Exhaust Modification Topic

BmwZ
I'm sure this system would make no difference to performance (good or bad) as it's a T off the back box so none of the issues of twin pipe runs, no backbox, etc. That others are concerned over.

Zed looks really nice :)

*Update

As detailed in this thread I had my quad conversion carried out some months ago, unfortunately it was quite noisy from the start and gradually increased so producing a drone - With this I needed to either amend the system of have a new one fitted.

After speaking to a number of specialist exhaust centres I chose an outfit over in Mansfield http://www.stainless-exhaust.com that work on premium and sports cars such as Ferrari’s, Caterhams, Aston Martins etc. They explained that my current system was noisy because the two (off the shelf) silencers were too small and of the 'straight through' type, so not producing enough dampening

After further discussion it was agreed they would hand make a custom built 3 pass silencer which then branch's off to the left and right exhaust tips – I have drawn the layout of the box below also a (crappy) picture of the silencer

I picked the Z up today and it feels like a different car, no drone, no spitting noises – just a nice and refined sound

The whole process from start to finish has cost me more than I initially wanted to spend, but I now have the quads I wanted, without the BOOM

Hopefully this will give any of you who want a quad conversion another option to choose

those U-clamps just ruin it.

if i was to run you over and you were trapped under the car, then yes its a bit of an eye sore

On a more serious note... This was done due to the bend in the pipes + if i ever decieded to go back to stock (i.e. sell the car) I could fit the OEM silencer

Here's mine done @ longlife in swansea. Really happy with the job!!!!!!
304 stainless from cat back. It's done using the "T" piece method off the left hand box. 3.5" exits. looks and sounds sweet!!!

anyone know how i can easily edit a short video clip i have so that i can post the vid?

Ranski - This looks very neat - what was thr approximate cost, and any noticeable difference in performance?

Cost was £550 (Custom made three pass muffler, piping, staggered tips & fitting)

We agreed on a three pass muffler as it still offers good flow and will control the output sound much better than a straight through design. I also asked for a adjustable joining in the pipes to the Muffler, also to the nearside exhaust tip (This will allow me to move back to an OEM setup if I decide to sell. Also as I hadn’t fitted the M bumper I wanted to be sure that the positioning of the tips were correct, if not I could adjust myself.)

Performance - I've read a lot about this on the forum, also carried out my own research along with talking to exhaust specialists. In my eyes there is very little, if no performance change, good or bad to my exhaust system. In part because it is still a free flowing system, also because I don’t think the OEM muffler is a straight through design. I make this assumption from the angle the pipes enter and leave, also because of how quite the system is. Although I cannot confirm this as i haven’t cut open an OEM muffler.

As you can see i still need to adjust the postioning of the right tail pipe, also black wrap the pipe in thermal tape that resides behind the grilldedm.jpg

Random - looking good.
You can just spay that pipe in ht black. I used BBQ black on my boxes and been fine for 2 years or so.

Have a can on the shelf at home if you want to try.

I might take you up on that offer Phil, besides 'Mr Mod King' I need some advice on the cut and shut angel light project, i may pop up your way if your about this week?

Cheers

Just had a custom quad exhaust system made sounds lovely not to loud and no drone in the car on the motorway really pleased and a good price.

Wish i had found this thread before i had my 'first attempt' straight through mufflers installed

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20872

As you can see from the below picture, the OEM muffler isnt a straight through design, infact its not even free flowing (just look at all the feathers can crap the OEM muffler was stuffed with) which is why its not booming instead very quite.

With this I can't understand how people who have had 'straight through' off the shelf muffler installed arent getting drone, or a too loud sounding exhaust like i had on my first conversion :?

Well I've finally had it done.
My Quad exhaust conversion has been carried out the Stainless Exhaust Specialist Ranski found in Mansfield.
Here's a couple of quick pics that I have been getting pestered for already.
The RH box has shifted a bit on the 200+ top down in the sun journey home, saw only one other Zed and E89 with the roof up on the A1, shame on whoever it was.
So in the end I went with some slightly staggered slash cut tips.

Looks very neat and really finishes off the aggressive rear of the Z

Wow looks great richard

I am there next friday for my exhaust also, getting something slightly different. Also want the cross over pipe sprayed black.

How long did it take to fit?

And Is there anywhere nearby that i can sit with a coffee or is it pretty much an industrial estate?
