Off with the old and on with the new Quad...

So today was the day I had the changes undertaken to the quad.

Heres the before picture:

So basically the old quad conversion was removed and packaged ready to be shipped to its new rightful owner.

So on with the new system then... Changes were made due to the system not sitting perfect with the carbon fibre diffuser and causing an annoying buzz now and again as it touched on the underside of the diffuser. So whilst having the rear section re-made I decided to make some alterations to the system. These are as follows

Decided to do away with the t piece section arrangement behind the rear bumper and pipe each side up straight from the mid section. Basically the existing system was cut back to just after the mid silencers. We then added in 2 booster type silencers straight after the exisitng silencer and then split the pipe around the diff to either side of the car.

A rear silencer was added to the LHS where the originial silencer used to sit; however it was not possible to get one on the RHS due to problems with the battery as covered previously on the forum may a time. I didnt want to go down CJ's route as good as it is in re-routing the battery. Basically the RHS is piped straight from the new booster silencer at the mid section to the exit pipe. To do this meant the slight relocation of the charcoal filter to enable the pipe to sit in the desired location.

Now to the final bit and probably the bit which will cause most debate on this forum. I decided that as I was changing the system to go for a different look. What I didnt want to do was go to this effort and expense for the system to look exactly the same. I've always been the kind of guy to want things to look different after spending money. Makes the parting of the cash somewhat easier I find  I don't recall seeing this type of exit pipe on any Z4 and quite liked the look of it. It just seems to suit the rear end perfectly with the CF diffuser. Looks so more aggressive than the previous set-up.

So I have attached some pics and would welcome any comments positive or negative. I know this is either a love it or hate it look.

Just to sum up the changes, the exhaust note has changed quite considerably. It's alot deeper sound, less raspier but the car seems to get quieter the higher the rpm and intrusive noise into the cabin at around 80MPH has been reduced which is one of the things I wanted tweaking with the system.

Obviousy the system will need to bed in again and will only sound better the more miles and soot that are put through it. Over all I'm very pleased with the outcome... cant help thinking a few flames wouldnt look out of place coming out of the pipes now and again :D

 Really like the DTM style up-swept tail pipes and diffuser on your car, would like to see a photo directly behind, but from higher up.

Also the Cades wheels, (are they the Tyrus, what offset are the rears?) and the retro pressed plates,
Very nice Zed,

There will always be someone who doesn't like the mods, but hey its your car, and it's you that it has to please, not them.

very nice, have you got a pic of it before it was installed, would be nice to compare to the 1 removed

Thanks Gookah.

I will get another photo tomorrow and post up for you

Cheers Taz.. Ive amended the post to show an before pic

The new layout should make the flow better. The tailpipes look bit strange (not straight).

Pictures from directly behind please - with the carbon too should look superb - look forward to following it at another meet soon. :driving:

Is it just the angle of the pictures taken? It looks like no gap between the top of the tailpipes and the diffuser. I just think the pipes will rub against the diffuser when the car is moving. Or the heat will cause damage to the diffuser.

There is a gap. The pipes are solid aswell there's no flex in them so they won't rub. Carbon is pretty tough so the heat won't cause any damage. On the same basis damage would be caused on the underside of the diffuser where the pipes pass through. BMW wouldn't have designed it this way if there would be a heat issue. :)

I think they look really good. All thats missing are the flames! Liking the upswept look.

I think the new exit pipes look really good and I also like the carbon diffuser. The quality of the workmanship and the installation also looks great.

Just wondering if one side won't 'breathe' and sound a bit different to the other due to both appearing to have a booster silencer, but only the LHS having a rear silencer (I'm sure I've probably missed something obvious here though).

Looks 'spot on' and an excellent mod. Just a bit concerned at the lack of silencer box on one side as potentially this could cause a pressure differential at the joint at the booster box between the two exiting systems. Not as critical as it would be in a 2 Stroke system which relies on the pressure to act as a scavenging process for unburnt gases etc but perhaps worth putting on a dyno to see if there are any glitches through the rev range. But overall love the look and the upswept tail pipes look great.

Looks greta JDM....look forward to a few more pics, showing the diffuser better
I also liked ur previous setup very much too :)
Looks good quality work/are the heatshileds and metal scuffplate all new..and who did all the work??

Hope to see it at a future meet asap :driving:

Looks spot on John...I like it as much as the previous style...as for the non OEM look, well that why you modify, to change to your personal preference.

All you need to do now is place a new sound clip on to compare against the old system, be interested to hear the sound difference.

Good work mate

I likey 8) The upswept pipes suit the diffuser spot on, right angle and length.

And +1 on the pressed plates, quite popular now, my sons got them on his 328ti. Better than the standard perspex ones that don't last due to water ingress and then end up looking poo.
