Go end September, when the weather's still good & much of the traffic is off the roads after the holidays. If you have a TomTom, just pack yr bags, set the destination as Rome via a number of the Top Gear best driving routes.
 
Great idea! I really fancy this too...

London.. Paris.. Zurich... Munich... Stuttgart... Luxemburg... Brussels... London and home. Would be a great trip.

Did Penrith to paris and back for a few days that was a fun trip.
