Well having been doing this stuff for well over a decade, I can tell you that a LWB 4x4 on slick rock at a constant angle is actually very easy. Standard tyres and a low gear ratio and believe it or not a standard car (low suspension, little articulation, etc.) makes it even easier.

Looks impressive and scaresthe hell out of passengers

Search Moab if you want to find lots of extreme rock crawling

i would love to have a go at this, out of all motor sports, this is the 1 i would choose to try first

Next time I'm up your part of the world I'll take you out.

You may regret it though

Here is a friend of mine doing a little OFF ROADING and yes he was ok after being airlifted to hospital. just bruising and a broken collar bone and his pride dented! Not to mention 20 grands worth of modified motor lost :(

I prefer the skill element rather then the speed one.

Me to - love slow skillfull, technical stuff. never been into the Comp Safari stuff at all. Very skillful of course but I'd prefer a rally car for that stuff.

I love the commentary LOL......not "is he dead?", just "I got it, I got it!!!"

I've always wanted to go off roading too!! Am seriously considering a Freelander 2 as a second car when I have some spare cash.

Of course if you're up here and open to passengers on an excursion CJ then I also have some petrol money available ;)

I've had a freelander, not bad for light off roading but i scratched it up too much to keep at it. If you want to do some off road stuff i'd suggest an older landy, cheaper and not so much of a crisis if you dent it. I'm a novice on the off road stuff and not really into the scene. Just recently picked up a series IIa 1968 which has been in a barn for 10 years. I need her to get me into some woodland to clear trees for firewood and a 4x4 is only way to get there. Tax exempt, cheap to insure and parts are cheap, mechanics basic but so is the comfort :-)

Good luck if you get into off roading, should be loads of fun.

Yeah I've heard that the FL2 is never going to be a serious off road monster, but it's reasonably capable and I wouldn't be hitting anything too horendous anyway, besides, I want a second car that is comfortable to use driving up and down the motorway full of people and luggage! The Defender certainly doesn't tick that box!

Discovery 3 is a better option mpg figures are similar ...... and larger boot........... stunning in this weather ..... obviously would get defeated by the type of stuff CJ10Jeeper is in to.

I bought a brand new 90 which i loved ......... troble is no one else did .... so it was either drive around on my tod or swap to a discovery.
