Coming home last night, I came across this wreck, which was blocking my road home in both directions.
Because of a large nearby river, the only alternate route home is an extra hour's drive around. Thus the only option was to drive around the wreck by going down into the borrow ditch, drive in the ditch for about 100 feet and then back up onto the road on the other side of the wreck. I wasn't sure it was even possible, and would certainly scrape bottom in any case. Fortunately, other traffic had beaten down the high spots. By careful placement of my wheels, I managed to get through with out even a scrape. I guess bumps look much larger a night!
The lorry was coming down off of a high mountain pass. He went off on the last curve before a long straight flat section where he surely could have recovered. Apparently his brakes gave out for an unknown reason. As you may surmise from the condition of the cab, the driver did not survive. Condolences go out to his friends and family.
There have been problems before on this curve, usually from over weight lorries, but this load does not look particularly heavy. It is supposedly some sort of car crushing equipment. Given that, it doesn't look heavy enough. It's especially sad when a life is lost when they weren't even doing anything wrong. A stark reminder of the importance of proper brake maintenance.
