The hoops already have threaded holes, the measurements are so you dont have to take plastic covers off.

I bought my OEM deflector as a kit and had the dealer install it. The kit came with (1) the deflector (2) two brackets that screw onto each roll hoop (3) new roll hoop covers with pre-drilled holes (4) two inserts for the roll hoops and (5) two brackets for storing the deflector on the underside of the boot lid.
In order to install the inserts, you have to remove the roll hoop covers. That will likely damage the covers or break the brackets holding them together. That's why the kit has new covers. I would be very wary of removing the covers if you don't have a replacement set like I did.
Also, I would test fit the thing before drilling any holes in your roll hoop covers. Pop the brackets into the deflector and test fit it between the roll hoops and mark where the brackets fit snugly and properly against the roll hoops. That way, you should not drill the holes in the wrong place.

Aso, see the comments of "Chickdr", particularly at Post #18, 31 and 33. I think his situation is the same as yours, so you can read about what he did to install his deflector.

Hi thanks for all the info and the bimmer one is great. I ended up just fitting the center piece as when I did start to separate the roll hoop covers I thought I'd do more damage than good then thought my head rests may stop the air coming back in to the cabin some how so took about 20 mins to fit the middle section. Very easy thanks to Russ59 s measurements
I brought the OEM wind defelector from BMW on ebay for £187, I was pretty surprised it did not come with brackets, they were only £50 for a pair, but they did include the screws!!!
To fit the brackets, you have 2 choices, drill the holes yourself or buy 2 new front roll bar covers I think they are £30-40 each.
So I took the easy route and followed the instructions / photos posted above. I used double sided tape to secure the brackets measure and drill. I found a vernier a good method for accurate measurement, but given the great photos published I was align and drill the holes and secure.
The work took under an hour to complete, I did not purchase the small infills for the roll bars, if I did I would have purchased the roll bar cover as it's likely the clips that secure it will break.
