OEM vs Koni Yellow vs Bilstein B6/B8

Evening all,

After one to many bloody potholes it looks like one of my struts is kaput :( . I've no interest in going down the coil over route, done all of that with my 7 and still have a box of springs to get rid of.

So as I see it choice is OEM, Koni yellows and Bilstein B6/B8, the car already has Eibachs so the springs will be staying. Had Koni's on my 7 and they were faultless for all the years I had the car, but that was a totally different suspension set up - So the question to those who have experience of Koni's and Bilstein's on your Zed......What do you reckon or stay OEM ?

I'd be very interested in this too. I can't comment on the zed sspecifically but bilstein b6s and b8s with Eibach springs were always raved about on the GTI6 foru I used to frequent.

I don't suppose you'd spare a lazy chap a search and post rough costs for thefronts and rrears for the Bilsteins? :P
 
Having just fitted the pro kit (Eibach) and also my front two struts being dead, i also need some guidance!! :D
 
I have a full set of OEM shocks for sale if anyone wants them?

Hi Ed,

Koni's are around £150 each for the fronts and £120 each for the rears, Bilsteins (B8's haven't really looked into the B6's) come in at £212 for the fronts and £125 for the rears. The OEM's from BM mini parts are £164 & vat for the fronts no idea about the rears.

Me too, one of my front ones is shot and i cant see the point of putting OEM is they wont last a year is im on H&R.
Looking at the B8s as they seem to be shortened so they'll take the lowering springs no porbs (if i understand correctly). Its just £400 + just the front two compared the £140ish from EPC when there on offer. :(
 
Again what's the issue with coilovers?

You get a better system that doesn't have to be low unless you want it to be and you will be more comfortable.

If your adamant coilovers are a no, then go for any oil filled damper.

The bilsteins are gas iirc and while great on track is harsh
 
When I had my z3m coupe I fitted Konis , 4 stage adjustable , quite basic but they did work well , only bought them because lark speed had a special offer on them , could be worth a look or enquiry as they have keen prices to better demon tweeks . I think the spring and shock package was £450 all in for my old coupe .
 
I'm leaning more towards the Koni's, read a few reviews saying that the B /8's are harsher than OEM, and for a fun weekend road car the Zed is plenty firm enough as is. According to Koni's website the yellow's are O.K with springs down to -35mm from std (So Eibachs will be O.K - Not sure about H&R's), alternativley you fella's could pick up Mat's used OEM set :wink:

By the way have you got that compressor up and going yet Mat?

Hi Mat,

When you do get round to it, and you need a hand or any bits let me know - Got a big project on down at Honda's engine plant at the mo, so I'm travelling past your way a couple of times a week.

Nice one Stu my mate is rewiring it some time soon. Once he has done that i will start connecting it up. And then i might need some help :thumbsup:
