was the strut brace BMW sell offered as a factory option when the car was sold or could i have had it fitted from new if i asked for it?

i believe that it was a dealer fit option. it could have been added from new. is this an insurance related question?

Apologies in advance for hijacking a thread

On the subject of the OEM strut brace does anyone know what the part number is for a replacement black plastic cover for the bolts... I'm missing one

yes if its a factory option its not a modification and does not add to premium (only possible on renewal )

Thanks! Just bought a pack! Not the same shape as the originals, but if I change them all no-one will notice... except me :(

Don't want to disagree with you.... but I had that very argument with Admiral recently. They told me that under their policies any optional extras selected over manufacturers' base spec had to be disclosed from the outset! I tried - in a very civil manner - that BMWs (including MINIs) and just about every other prestige brand had spec sheets as long as your arm... weren't interested. So, had to try to cross reference an old manufacturers spec list with my build sheet. Then disclose the mods that I have done (and those carried out by a previous owner). For two cars! Absolutely nuts... took my business elsewhere in the end.

Not sure how many other insurers take the same stance...

mine added a small premium to the policy.... 5.00GBP to be precise. i did however try to say the car came with it but they asked for my original build sheet.... i quickly retracted that statement.

Yeah, I don't think it made much difference price-wise on mine, either, although the mods were a different story... It was just a total PITA and a waste of my time, trawling the web trying to find a 'base' spec to start with... :headbang:

I bought a OEM brace of ebay but when i contacted my insurance company they said they wouldn't insure the car if it was fitted even though i tried to tell them that it was an BMW OEM part, the company in question was Admiral even though they were more than happy to insure the car when i ditched the R/flats :?

Sounds about right! When I first insured my 5er with them I declared my aftermarket (£550) alloys and non run-flats (£700). Fine, no problem - but if they get stolen we will replace them with standard (£1300) wheels and run-flat tyres (£1000)... utter nonsense!

I rang my insurance company today with a few mods to ad to my policy. No extra due - as I was sticking with BMW parts. Suppose each insurance company will be different. I expected a big bill, but there was no charge
