oem strut brace

IIRC i read on here a brace on your car, if hit on the side could cause damage to the opposite side.
Makes sense

For the sake of pennies why run the risk at the end of the day. My piece of mind is worth more to me than the premium increase and if it wasnt, I wouldnt do the modification in the first place.
That's the thing: the whole point of insuring something is to negate the risk of damage to it. Why then increase that risk and potentially void cover by not declaring really mods that have an obvious effect on the performance of the car?

I'm just off the phone to my insurance company(Admiral) and they said thay would not insure the car with this fitted as they class it as a major modification.
So on that note i'm not going to fit it and it will be going into the buy/sell section.

Sorry to hear that-i didnt want to be the bearer of bad news

You were right to mention it Andy i'd rather found out this way rather than if something did happen and they could use it to wiggle out of paying out.

I'm with Admiral and they weren't that bothered with everything I had done, however in January when the renewl comes and I'm no longer a new customer.........
But how can that strut brace be classed as a major modification.

It is strange what insurance companies will and wont allow. Admiral told me that I could add an exhaust filter and lowering springs and its only £50 on the premium however they wont let me change the brakes from standard pads. I did talk to them and they said its based on claims data even though the guy admitted it did sound odd. However they have their underwriting criteria and they arent going to change it just for one person

Does it not make a pretty major difference to the car's handling characteristics?

It probably comes down more to the fact that doing mods like a strut brace put you into more of a "racer" type of category, and thus higher risk to the insurance company.

No, Definately should have been along with the aero skirts.. Sometimes feel //M did a half ass job with this one beautiful bonnet, bumper, axle off another car engine from the same then off to bed for another year

If its a proper OEM BMW strut brace, surely the insurance company cant classify that as a major modification? The wouldn’t classify a BMW roof box as a major modification, and its in the same accessories brochure!!! :P

Why not? A strut brace is a strut brace (OEM or not) and I'm sure that the statistics must say that the kind of person who fits one to their car is more likely to be driving "spiritedly" and thus more likely to have an accident. Basic insurance concepts of risk
