OEM Sat Nav Issues

I drove up to London earlier using the built in sat nav for directions. Worked perfectly to Reading but then proceeded to tell me to turn off the M4 and basically got a bit muddled. I arrived in Watford (using google maps on iphone) and check the map to find out it had placed me somewhere South of Oxford.

Did a search on here and found other people with the issues but nothing firm was established re: what causes the problem. Anyone solved the problem? Further, where are the GPS sensors built into the car?

Cheers

Matt

More info needed here Matt

1) What verson of the nav software are you running?
2) What version of map DVD are you using?

Cheers
Jamie

3) What destination did you put in - Postcode or place / street
4) What routing do you have (Fast / Dynamic)
5) Did you check the route before you set off and it changed later on?

Mine does something similar from time to time, but it's so infrequent (one a month or so) & random (might not happen for 3 months, then 3 times in a week) that there's nothing to check.

It used to get about 75% through the journey and then almost tell me to do a 180 and head back home - or it would reroute me through some country lanes to avoid a traffic jam and then bring me back onto the motorway a couple of junctions BEFORE the place I'd gotten off at.

But as I said, these were random & infrequent occurrences and I have a TomTom 740 anyway and was only using the OEM kit for traffic news.

I only found that issue when I had my satnav set to "dynamic" routing as it automatically uses the traffic info to go a weird route. Is yours set to that?

Dynamic routing ? I've only got Use Motorways, Fastest, Shortest, Exclude Tolls.. I've got a wierd firmware on it but I still don't remember this from before....

Like mmm-five, mine has these very random hickups. It hadn't done it for 4+months and strangely enough, did it about 4-5 times last night (resetting, sometimes losing position for a while). Thankfully it didn't do this when I actually needed directions/road closures!

Mine doesn't have a 'dynamic' mode... Last night I noticed the 'Fastest' route diverted me around a large (10+mile) road closure, however the 'Short' route wanted me to use the closed road! How rare!

I also once found out on old tyres that it can get quite confused when drifiting under trees with low GPS signal  :D

Yeah, you have a 2006 model - right?

Don't know who you're asking mate, but my car is a MY03 with Satnav firmare V32, 2009-2 Maps both modified for speed cameras... Oh wait no... "Safety Cameras"

I was asking Andy, but does not matter :)

V32 should have dynamic routing option. It is a check box.

Likewise, 2007 with OEM only. You should see a Dynamic option with a check box in the settings.

Cheers for the replies. The problem seems similar to what you have said Mmm five and Ed. Also have the issue where the screen doesn't always come up when ignition is turned on. Will have to jeep an eye on it.

I was arse ended by a Mini yesterday (looked like no damage at the time so drove off without insurance details of the Mini driver - bad move as in the daylight I can see what looks like cracks under the laquer grrrrrrr).

I just wondered if there was anything behind the bumper (ie any GPS type electronics) that could have been damage following said bump.

There is an aerial in the bumper, for FM I think. Not sure about the blu tooth aerial.

Mine too. v32 & 2009-2... Ed do you have Dynamic ? :o

I'm intrigued pvr

i have dynamic in mine too.

Never had any problems with dynamic.. as thats my default route option.

No Dynamic for me... Now i want cos "Fast" is really quite rubbuish!

Edit: Ahh it seems like its only on physically newer versions of the BM54 Tuner (Some time in 2005>on). And all it does it automatically divert you around traffic etc based upon the time you're expected to be delayed... Considering my Sat-Nav's traffic alerts time estimates are always about double my average delay, i think ill pass!

I originally thought Andy's car would be in this date range, however forgot he retrofitted his NAV! :)

Don't think it is tuner based, but MKIV unit itself. My X5 is from 2005 and did NOT have dynamic. Under warranty, I got the MKIV unit replaced in 2007 / 2008 and from then on I had dynamic.

Unless they changed the tuner and did not tell me ...

Nope... my Nav was factory fit, & the car is Jan 2006... I have a custom firmware but I'm 99% sure I never had this when I bought the car. Will be reflashing back to v32 Stock soon as it's hanging sometimes (my dvd most likely) so will be checking this out...

I'd love a warranty claim on the head unit - as some that have been replaced have dual tuners.. so you can get TMS whilst u have the radio on..

I listen to Radio 1 all the time and get traffic alerts on my Nav - often with the reroute around (which i ignore) Are you saying if you have a single tuner you cant listen to the radio and get the nav traffic alerts?
