OEM Nav doesnt use the stteering wheel controls

I meant just generally... both the nav and controls look a bit after thought it my eyes.

They are handy and convenient, but I think they ruin the lines/spartan style of the interior... from a user point of view, good, from an aesthetics, bad :D

...I'd have been really pissed off to have paid £ 1500 for a built in nav only to find i couldn't get on with it....

Even more so as it was £1935 in 2004, not sure how much more since. When you considre how good the portables have become and their price, I'm surprised there so many cars have the OEM. Guess the other screen functions swing it for some, guess a few are demo cars.

I've used a TomTom and whilst it does have better software, even the XL can be tricky to read in some lighting and having to find somewhere to stick it without it falling off, is a right pain. Then you have cables running over the dash and on the routes I've used it it likes to keep reminding you to keep right, every time you pass a bloomin laybay :headbang:

I love having the built in satnav, yes it's software could be considerably better, it could show you some of the smaller roads without having to zoom in so far, but it does the job and offers several other functions which are very handy. No cables, no dirty marks on the windscreen, seems to cope better in bright sunshine, well located. It's just a very nice gadget to have and I wouldn't buy any upper class car without built in satnav now.

I love the prof sat/nav. The "drama" of the folding screen never fails to impress! Now I have the 09 maps and newest o/s it works as well as any Tom Tom (in my opinion). I think the interior would look a little drab without it.

Did you get your updates through the stealer or elsewhere?

One other good thing about the OEM is the BMW Connected Drive thingy - I've just registered for it and I can now send addresses / phone numbers directly to my car via the BMW connected drive website, or even google maps - which is really cool as well as being useful as it means you can use 7 digit postcodes. There are a few other useful features as well......

I've got it and aren't fan

Tomtom is much easier to use and unless you hack the OEM, a postcode isn't possible

Poor really compared to a £120 tomtom

Saying all that I wouldn't buy a car with out it, unless I could get it at a stellar price

my vote for the TomTom... I have a dash mount so don't have to stick it to the windscreen :D And the wires can be rerouted to look neat too...

I could use a bigger screen for the bluetooth though :?

My experience is that the factory nav systems cost too much and have too little detail when you wander off the major routed and away from from the major towns and cities. A trip I made last summer with my brother visiting small wineries in the Napa-Sonoma area of northern California amazed me with the data base of his Garmin system. It was amazing. On the down side, it didn't give a lot of warning about turns coming up. Not a problem maybe with a BMW, but a challenge in a Honda with four adults. When I trade my Z4 for my next car, I'll pass on the factory nav system. I travel a lot and that's when you really need a nav system. I don't need one to find my way home but I would like to have one to figure how to get back to the airport to return my miserable rental car. A portable system solved this problem.

I have had a feeling for some time that on this side of the pond that in general we place a little less value on the OEM Navigation option. Within our local ZSCCA Chapter of about 40 Zed's it is a option rarely seen.

One of the features that I find extremely valuable on my Magellan is the 2 mile warning you get as to which lane to be in on multi-lane highways as you approach a complex inter-change.

Each country has it's own level of expectations of standard equipment. The UK has always had a much higher level of equipment then for example Germany and certainly, The Netherlands. Back in the 80's, the UK had sunroofs as the first country and electric windows, both of which were virtually unheard of on the continent. The same with the radio.

If you buy an expensive car in the UK without satnav (OEM), it can really, really difficult for resale as there is an expectation it should be in there. Bit like having cloth in a 7 series - noone wants that second hand. When I ordered my X5, he showed me in the Glasses guide that a car without the "comms pack" was worth 4k less after a year. The comms pack itself was £2k on order, so it did not make sense not to order it.

Within the range of Z4s, it may make a difference as well. Someone buying a 2.0 might want to buy the cheapest car possible to get within an employer's allowance and also may not care too much about the OEM satnav. To be honest, with such a low base price, adding an option which is a large percentage of the new price of the car, makes not a lot of sense.

Now the other side of the range - the 3.0 and M models. When buying cars of that price range, the expectations are just higher. Buying one new without the toys will certainly hurt upon resale. Just look at the M's that are out there without Nav, they are substantially cheaper and also hang around for absolutely ages.

I personally disagree.

I looked for a car without the Nav unit. I was after a sports car. If I did, others will too. I also narrowed my choice down to 2 at the dealers. One had the Nav, the other didn't. The interior of the non-Nav car was better as it had the piano black/extended champaign napper leather, the other having the all black and silver dash interior (which I myself feels a bit dull and gloomy!). They were around the same price also.

Nothing worse a few years down the line when that unit is about as old hat as a cassette player and you are stuck with it. It may be useful for the other functions that screen does, but the Nav will start to look dated very quickly. I'm fine with my Tom Tom unit, and I only use that around twice a year! Just my opinion. :)

By the way, just done a national search on Z4 3.0Si's and it isn't really making a difference weather there is Nav or not on price. One dealer is selling a 2008, no Nav with only 100 miles on the clock for £29,000 which is more than a 2008 Z4M with Nav at another dealers!!

The second one does have Xenons and upgraded stereo too, but there's a lot of difference in price due to just a few options. I imagine it would make less difference in a private sale though, better specced cars will probably just sell quicker, rather than for 2k more.

2nd one has a lot more options for that £2k, plus it's a year newer!

Elec Fold Exterior Mirrors
Ext. mirrors - folding. auto dimming
Extended storage
Hi-Fi Sys Prof Carver
Navigation System Professional
Park Distance Control (PDC). rear
Wind deflector
Windscreen with green shade band
Xenon headlights

That is true. Take the Nav out of that price and I doubt there would be much difference to be honest.

With the M and 3.0si second hand prices being so close now, do you think that the M was overpriced in the first place? :?

Actually, do you think a well specified Z4 (not base model) of any engine was a bit overpriced? :?

When I used the glasses VERY specific guide when buying, I didn't know the spec of a car, so did a check without Xenon, Multichanger and ProNav, and then with, and it made no difference to ANY price.

At that point I stopped using Glasses as a guide on anything to do with my Z4. Indeed, all prices were within about £200 of the general roughly corrected for mileage values Parkers offer for free.

I think a car is what it is worth to the people who want them, and dealers will only inflate prices when near new for kit because it makes it easier for them to then sell... nothing really to do with value imho, more quick saleability which is what dealers want on newer higher depreciating cars, and so pay a premium for it!

Sorry to ask again but did you get the upgrade from the stealer's or did you manage to find it elsewhere?
