OE Windscreens

Hi, my windscreen chap is saying that BMW (oe supplier) no longer make the windscreen for Z4's so only choice is an after market Pilkington - anyone else had this issue?

He's not saying this because of cost as I've suggested I would pick up the cost difference, but just disappointed if a manufacturer has dropped support for something that is a fairly often replaced consumable.

yes, hence I said BMW's OE supplier which was Saint Gobain on the E85. They have fitted Pilkington and its not a great fit or finish around the edges, so they are redoing (for the 3rd time) this time using an oe seal as the other one looks too small.

Now I know some people will say there is no difference, but on an Audi aftermarket glass was fitted, which resulted in the auto cruise etc to not work, the fix was to fit OE glass so I am weary of pattern parts.

Mines a Pilkington screen, fits perfectly. The original BMW marked one was also a Pilkington screen.

yes mine is Pilkington too. I asked for OE and offered to cover the cost , but didn’t happen.

You absolutely have to use OE surround trim though. They fitted mine initially with a cheap one and it was a disgrace (after having them confirm it was OE before hand. ).

Also took three attempts on mine for various reasons … first screen they put on had the biggest blue sun strip on it. Wtf!

I'm pretty sure the screen on my Z4 says Pilkington and has the BMW logo. So the only difference buying from BMW would be the logo and the price!

The problem with the OE and other seal is if they bend it, its rooted. and youll have to order another one. lots of supplier don't understand that. Ive ordered 3 OE ones myself, the first 2 came bent over on itself in a mailing bag.. after i rang the distributer personally, finally it was sent in a long shipping box. Not easy to replace the seal btw. Probably one of the hardest jobs out there. ESP if the installer hasn't been spot on with window centering.

the OP is right OE manufacturers have ceased production for certain BMW models and this seems to affect late 90s models through to 00's
a lot of BMW e46 parts are no NLA and prices were slashed at dealers ebay shops
