Odometer Mileage Decreasing - yes really!!

Did at any point you hit 88mph?
?

I'd definitely be pressing BMW to sort this. Can't believe they would be happy with stories of 1Series showing less than true mileage.

I spoke with my friend today ,forgot yesterday ...He was at bmw Acc and on courses all week so perfect timing really .... The instructers don't even know for sure lol ..But they reckon if the tamper light is not on then someone has been trying to programme something out of the dme control untit .. This may or may not be mileage related .... More than likely this would be one left on down the phone line for diagnosis . Not much help but If they don't know lol who will . I was wrong about the keys they just hold service data .

Very interesting. Strange that it just happens now after nearly a year of ownership and previously a month after purchase. Certainly crossed my mind someone had done something in the past, but no evidence of tampering and all the services, mot etc make sense.

Oh no - the mileage has dropped again today by another 2,000 ....

Drove 6,000+ miles last year and with 3 drops of 5,000, 500 and 200 we went to the MOT station with annual mileage of 400. Even they questioned it as barely used :(

Dropped again today by 2,000 miles, so the car is now at less than in 2012

No tamper lights, mileage reads out correctly when hooked up to OBD port. Done nothing to the car for months. No battery disconnects, no warnings, Indy serviced last week and driven 3 times then this morning bam - miles dropped by exactly 2,000

To some it seems like a dream car, but really bugs me now.....

Wow this is unbelievable. Sorry I can't help ... Big problem for resale though as your MOTs now will look odd :'(

Surely all you can do is drop BMW UK an email?

I've heard of similar issues after jump starting, they really don't like it.

Would be interested to see any references to these. Everyone I've spoken to says it's impossible, never happens, etc.

May try writing direct to BMW Customer services

Sounds like someone in the know needs to do some trouble shooting on this. How does the car take the mileage readout? I guess from a wheel speed sensor or something like that. So is there an issue there perhaps?

Does it show any issues on diagnostics?

As others have said get it in to BMW and go armed with a video or photographic evidence.

Hope you manage to get it sorted either way.

Sounds like a case for "Honest John" at the daily telegraph, he would probably know of any strange goings on with the 1 series.

Andi.

I can't stand Honest John :headbang:

Just google BMW jump start mileage correction

From one of the sites offering mileage correction:

One of the reasons for the incorrect reading of the data on the digital odometer of the BMW 3 series is the corruption of the data while jump starting the car.

So all has been good for a couple of years until got the car back from a service last week. Daughter drove about 10 miles and it's dropped by exactly 8,000 miles.
It's now lower than at the last MOT and no chance of her covering enough this year to be back to 'correct; so will show very odd MOT history stats.

Guess it's time to take to a mileage correction service and in an ironic twist for such companies increase the mileage...

Could I hire your daughter to drive my car please!

Believe me I've heard all the jokes and could have written a book on them. On the surface it seems good, but it's now pretty much an unsaleable car.

Just subscribed to this thread, cant offer any explanation but interested to hear of an eventual outcome.

Apparently, from next year it will be illegal to "correct" mileages, or to even be in possession of the equipment to do it, in the same way as IMEI changing equipment..

So I'd get a shuftie on if you are gonna get it done, and sell it before next year in case you can't do it again..

Pretty much sum's it up  possibly a buyer through the forum who knows the genuine story but the minute you start attempting to explain " shifty odometer readings between MOTs " you're gonna struggle to sell for close to the vehicles true worth

Weird stuff! :scratchhead:

It sounds like the common factor is being serviced? The keys obviously store vehicle data inc miles, use patterns etc and upload on to the BMW database at service time, is it possible that a key is non-original of not functioning correctly and is conflicting with a second key which isn't in sync?

Me too! I've added about 12k miles since owning (July last year)! I'll happily have the 8k drop you've had (before my own MOT is due)!
