I joined this forum back in2013 and have enjoyed reading all your reviews and comments ref the delights and issues of owning a Z. I did look at a boxster but for the money available the Z was the better option. And i have owned my 3.0se since April 14, having had many a fun day driving and the car is a delight to drive.

Being a bit of a closet detailer I do like my cars to look their best. So now the winter has set in, the panels are coming off. The engine bay was first. Followed by the front and rear bumpers. The side skirts followed soon after, and currently the wheel arch liners are coming out.

What I would like to know , are there any areas that tend to build up with road c**p where I may need to spend time. Generally the areas I've already done haven't been to bad for a car of its age..(2004)

Wow and i thought i was anal :o

Great work, a man after my own heart

The only thing that i know of and is mentioned this forum a lot is the roof drains, located to the front of the rear arches. I'm sure you've already cleared those though

Stu Boy, thanks, I think it's worth the effort. I must admit the roof drains had been the first point of attact after reading the reviews. The roof motor side was the worst, but it wasn't not flooded. Just an accumulation of small leaves, which long team could have caused issues.

Are you coming up to Duxford in May, a bit of a trek for you but a great day out and would be good to meet up

There are plenty of particular guys like you there :P

It's a possibility. So far I haven't been great distances in the car.. But I am planning a Welsh drive with my son ( when back from uni) for a long weekend. And the Welsh run posted on the forum looks interesting.

That's certainly some attention to detail 8) I like to keep my car looking it's best but this is another level.
Good work.

You have a Scuff on the cover above the radiator

I know and it's a pain, maybe I will at some point, if funds allow look for a new cover. It was caused by the bonnet just touching the plastic, due to the stops being set wrong, allowing it to flex.

So, and be honest with us, having done all of that dismantling, were there any particular areas where there was an accumulation of dirt? Not that I have any intention of such dismantling (because it would never get back together)!

Good job though!

RickRob thanks.

the bigest accumulation of dirt was along the side skirts. Especially at the rear, but more so on the passengers side due to being in the gutter I suppose.
the area behind the front bumper was a lot better than I was expecting. The cross member under the rear bumper had a bit more surface rust. But with a bit of sanding, primer and black paint it doesn't look so bad now..

But as you said, all the plastic clips are a pain to get apart, especially the side skirts.
Putting back together, you really need two people for the front if you have headlight washers. The rear is straight forward to refit.

If you buy new clips for the side skirts (£1.04 each from the stealers x14) then they almost pop back on. Hardest point is around the door hing area feeding the panel beck in..

Great job Beatman this is how the Zed should be looked after, Ive also spent quite a bit of time under the car with the help of my new hydraulic ramps, all covers off check all fastenings and a bit of wax oiling, gives you confidence in reliability in things that are out of sight.
Keep up the good work it pays in the long run. Cheers Baz

They do bring out some odd tendencies these Z4's... I recall a dealer once commenting on my car and saying 'you Z4 boys don't half look after your motors'. Something about them I guess...

Indeed, ive spent over two weeks just on my headlights, new brighter AEs, better diffusers, hand polished the lenses, cleaned back covers and headlights, and the top of the lense has black paint but mines flacking away so i made a template bought some black rubber sheets bout 1mm thick and made some cut outs to cover up all the eye sore even tho when the lights are on the car you can only see a small part
And today i fully detailed the inside of my Zed even tho ive only used it once for 2 miles since the last full detail two months ago.....im a nitemare with my Zed

I must admit to sometimes spending more time cleaning & polishing than driving at times. But the Z has to look it's best when on the road :D
