Occasional Track Day Wheel/Tyre recommendations

I'm looking to change the wheels on my 2007 Coupe 3.0si Sport and think i'm fairly sure I'm going for these:

Does anyone have any recommendations for tyres that would be good for the odd track day (open pit lane sort of thing rather than racing)?
 
Don't know what size you're looking at, but if I was going to get a set purely for trackdays, I'd be trying to keep the cost of the rubber down by going to 17" wheels and a set of budget tracktyres - something like these Federal 595RSR or these Nankang NS2R for about £75 each.

Alternatively, spend a little more and get a tyre from known brand Yokohama AD08R for £85

Pilot Super Sport/Pilot Sport Cup was something I'd considered as I know a lot of people on the track day forums rate them, but I didn't spot any Z4 owners on there so wasn't sure if it was a good option for the Z4.
 
A square set up with maybe 235/45/17 all round would be my choice for track day fun. Probably on 8j rims. Yokohama AD08's are a good tyre. I have them on my Atom, and are good for road and track, although the atom is not heavy enough to get much heat into them.
 
Square set up is a good point, I hadn't really considered that.

I had been trying to kill two birds with one stone, so have it looking quite nice with some new wheels (I had even started looking at 19s!) and be good fun on track, but I'm thinking those two may be at odds with each other.

I think I may have ran those Yokohama on my old Type-R and that always did well on them.
 
pilot super sport isn't in the league of a semi slick....

i un the nankang ns2r and tbh... they are awesome, i run the road compound to try and get some usability and they really are fantastic... hard wearing too, grip levels are high enough that you think something is going to break, really progressive to slide and and the steering feel is fantastic with these, i love them!! They are supposed to be pretty decent in the rain too, I've been caught out a couple of times and they haven't felt dangerous, they cost a quarter of a high performance road tyre like PSS but in the dry grip area these wee all over them, sadly they are good for one thing really , track / fast road driving so if you need a more rounded type the PSS is much better in this respect.



 
I too recoment Michelin Pilot Super Sport. I have used this now since spring 2011. Very happy with them. Very good grip both on dry and wet. Very durable too. :thumbsup:

I need to drive across the country to get to the large tracks here in Norway (about 600 km one way), so I dont want to use semi slicks on the roads.
I use 19" (225/35 and 265/30)

On tyreleader.co.uk they actually have four options:

* 120 Track
* 180 Street
* 100 Comp
* Medium

As I'll be doing weekend driving and the odd road trip to European tracks I'm thinking the 180 Street or Medium may be the best options.
 
I'm happy to give you 3x 18" Falken 452's ( 2x Rears & 1x Front) that are all just about legal, (2-3mm) for a token forum donation.

Probably no good for a wet day but I would imagine fine for slicks !

Really appreciate the offer, very kind of you. If you were a bit closer and I could easily get the tyres swapped over I'd have given it a go! Thanks again, I appreciate the thought.

they only have two options... medium or soft. That website is incorrect, i run the medium to try and get some balance , their are times when I'm really happy for that choice and their are other times on track where i wish id gone for the soft for that little bit more grip. End of the day its a semi slick so its USP is dry grip, these are not an all round tyre.

You reckon the NS2R is ok for daily street though? I'll not be tracking the z but after running 888's on a previous car i think these may be the way for me. I take it easy in the rain anyway and heard theses aint so bad

the medium compound is great for the street.... take it easy in the rain and it'll be fine, just remember with any semi slick they are best in dry conditions, everything else is a compromise. They are really impressive, bmwz4mc uses them and he also runs the car on the street more than me, so maybe a PM to get some advice from him?
