OBD Logger

After the extensive input by the forum I decided to go for this...

Thanks for posting - I'd be keen to hear on the success of this as I've got an occasional fault on my 'van causing it to go into limp-home mode and would be keen to run something like this.

Should (hopefully) work on all my vehicles I'd hope...

Sorry Peddy :( didn't see this before.

I have an Ediabas/Vag Com cable to use with Ediabas/NCS Expert

A Carsoft cable for er.... Carsoft!!

Just bought a Bluetooth Elm327 off eBay for a tennner, can use loads of software with it like PCM scan etc. Allows O2 and quick Maf reading/logging. Great bit of kit and can work with the Torque app on android!

a11y, For sure... I'll do a little write up.

EdButler, No probs, I was joking. :)
Unfortunately I don't have an andriod phone, so tried to get an emulator working, but with no success! :(

I'm also currently trying to sort out INPA/Ediabas/DIS in my spare time. I'm up to the getting VC to detect the COM port. DIS is all setup via VMWare, so I think once I have INPA/Ediabas installed I should be sorted.

For anyone interested in this I would join the bimmerfest fest forum. There's a whole section on Diagnostics (maybe we can have one too).

There's also a guide on Youtube. It's in 14 parts, so won't post them all. Here's the 1st. There's links on the right to the next part...

EDIT: I've stuck the whole guide in the How-To section... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=27872

Yeah if you need a hand, let me know... Took me a while to get my head round originally, especially NCS Expert! Bmw Scanner is fantastic though and i much prefer it to do most things (you don't have to translate everything from German for a start!!)

What does the DIS offer above those two, do you know?

Thanks Ed!

My understanding of DIS is that it's just a friendly front end GUI which 'talks' to INPA/Ediabas, which covers all the diagnostic parts.

There's also SSS which is for configuring all the cars/keys specific options, such as locking the car when you drive off, etc.

Worked a little on this last night and I'm currently at the stage of configuring SSS to detect the interface, which I'm having difficulty ATM.

Hopefully I'll soon be adding myself to the diagnostic thread.

I like the sound of that SSS stuff...
DIS and SSS is what BMW dealers use. INPA/Ediabas is what BMW factories use.

I wonder if there's something out there which would allow you to do all this remotely.

I will be having my setup so I can do all the diagnostics/coding via my room (connect my netbook with the obd interface and then remote desktop into it), but to properly do it remotely would be really cool. :)

EDIT: Had a quick think and I actually think it's feasible. The client would just need to have a router that supports IPSEC (so you could create a VPN connection) and, of course, an OBD cable. Anyways, not sure how much of a feasible service that would be considering the client would need a cable.

So the OBD logger arrived yesterday, which was a nice surprise as the eBay seller stated it'll take 5-11 working days, so
Will be out tonight and over the weekend so will stick it in and report back sometime during the weekend. Watch this space... :)

Cool give it a go and let's compare results. :)

Good thing about CarChip Pro is that it's tiny (smaller than I thought TBH - I'll get pics up to show you guys), so you'd never know it's there!

I have just read this thread from start and can honestly say I understood 0% of it

You young uns with your gadgets

Nosa, I'm 36 and I understood 0% too. But it would be cool if the techno wizards above you work out how to diagnose and modify remotely ie I buy a cable, connect to my car and laptop, download VIA a cheap program off the internet or something and send info to the techno savvy who in turn analyse it and send back the diagnosis/ modification VIA email that can be downloaded straight to the car VIA own laptop and own bought cable. Or is this extremely over simplified idea an impossibility?
