Car has been parked up for about 10 days.
Took it out yesterday and engine management light was on.

Can anyone recommend a definitely compatible, affordable OBD reader.

Just want to be able to check and clear codes.

So many around so not sure which work on an E89 2009.

Thanks

There are many OBD readers..what do you define as affordable?

One time purchase vs rental?

Simplicity vs Complexity?

Engine only or Chassis and Engine?

Sub £50.
One time purchase.
Simple, probably engine only.

Have done a forum search and the C110 is mentioned often, not sure if it's E89 compatible though.
£20 one on ECP which I could go and get in 10mins, but description is vague on compatibility.

Thanks

Any ELM327 one will be fine. Use Torque app to scan and reset codes connected by Bluetooth.

If you have an iPhone I think engine link app does the same thing.

There's two main types of code readers.

Generic code readers that will show only OBDII fault codes and any non marque specific app like Torque and most probably whatever ECP sells for £20. These are pretty much useless.

Manufacturer specific code readers that will retrieve all fault codes from all modules. The cheapest way to do what you want is to buy a K+DCAN cable and use INPA on a laptop to scan for codes. If you want to do it all from a mobile device then the best option is an app called ProTool by Bimmergeeks.

I wouldn't say they are useless, on the occasions I have had to use it instead of inpa the codes have been fairly useful and pointed to the issues (from memory it diagnosed faulty tps and also a bad o2 sensor). For a tenner I'd give it a go personally.

If you are local to Northamptonshire you are more than welcome to use my scanner to have a look.

Just seen your location, probably cheaper to buy one

A code reader that only shows and resets a fraction of the possible codes available sounds pretty pointless to me.

I appreciate the offer, excuse for a drive!!!!
Really after a simple stand alone ‘tell me what’s wrong and reset’ type.

There's a free android app coming soon that'll let you scan for error codes and do battery resets. It will let you use a £5 ELM327 dongle so if it all works as promised then I think we have a winner on the budget front.

Whereabouts are you? If you're near London (E18) I'm happy to try my veepeak and bimmercode/torque etc

Thanks Jason, am grateful for the offer but a jaunt to London from Scotland is a stretch for a Sunday afternoon.

I got a disc and cable from ebay and used my laptop for my E85 - OK so its not carly but its a cheap way of scanning for codes

We have the National meet in the Lake District shortly, you could come down and say hello while we read your codes:)
