O2 Sensor Replacement

Wazzman sent me an email about replacing the Upstream O2 sensors and wondered if I could write up a How-To.

Since I am up in CT. and do not have my Zed with me, I cannot do this...

BUT

On the M54 engine you do not need to remove the exhaust manifolds. That would be a PITA....

You just need a O2 sensor socket. You can get one for about $15.00 at most auto parts stores.. 99% of all O2 sensors are uniform in size so one O2 sensor socket fits all. The difference between this socket and a regular socket is that the socket is split so you can fit the socket over sensor and get the sensor wire out of the way...

The fit is tight but once you slip on the O2 sensor socket over the O2 sensor, they come off very easily, and go back in rather easily also.

Well I was referencing a Haynes Repair Manual that is supposed to be for the 3 series and the Z4. In chapter 6-11 it says to remove the O2 sensor, raise the car onto supports as to completely remove the exhaust system. I have never heard of anything like this and all that I have ever done were really quite simple 15 minute tasks. If what that manual says is true then it would be very hard to do. I assumed the manual was correct and apparently from what you are saying, it is not :(

The only time you have unbolt the exhaust from the header it to replace the DOWNSTREAM (from the CATs) sensors, and they usually don't go bad.

The upstream sensors can be accessed from the engine compartment. it took me 15mins to replace both of mine...

My problem was reading the How To in the Haynes BMW 3-Series including the Z4 book. Evidently it is more complicated on the 3 series. After I looked for them I saw two sensors right there in easy reach. That is what I get for reading. I have the tool and have done it on other cars and to tell you the truth this one even looks easier. :)

After looking at them I really don’t see why anyone would take it to a mechanic unless the Zed is under warranty and then again I would think about it if it were a long way to go at the current fuel prices. :(

I don’t need any now, and if I did I am not sure my little town would have a shop with one in stock, so I would probably have to order one or travel to the dealer to get one or two.

Sorry I bothered you about the DIY, my face is red. Really not needed.

By the way, for anyone reading this, in my opinion the Haynes manual for the Z4 is completely worthless except for some specifications and tables that can be had other places. Save your money.

I agree about the Haynes manual. I bought one and it really is worthless for the Z4, even though it says it covers the Z..

Don't worry about bothering me... If anything, the thread will help someone else... and thats what we are here for....
