O2 sensor on invoice but not replaced

Hi, I really need some advice please before to contact the dealer.

The engine management light came on 18th May 2011 for the O2 sensor and it was replaced free of charge the same week by BMW as a good will gesture because the warranty expired on the 9th May 2011, just 10 days ago. They also gave me a repair invoice to confirm that the O2 sensor was replaced.

Now 2 days ago, the engine management light came on again so I went to an indie to check the fault, which is again the 02 sensor. We checked visually both o2 sensors (before and after catalytic converter) and they look both old and rusty!!! It seems that BMW just cleared the fault last time so it came up again after 2 months.

Can the dealer prove that they replaced the part? how to be sure that it was replaced?

Thanks in advance for your help

From the fault code you should be able to identify which sensor was at fault and then narrow down which one they supposedly changed (you can cross reference this against the part number if shown on the invoice).

When I've had O2 sensors fail the light comes on and very rarely goes out until the unit is replaced.

Whilst I seldom defend the stealers I would say that if the stealer can claim under warranty BMW pay so it is in their interests to do the work. Also those O2 sensors are in just about the hottest place in the car. They won't take long to lose their shine.

Out of interest which engine do you have? I've changed one of the sensors on a Coupe - not too hard and only about £90 for the part.

You must go back to the dealer and ask why the light has come on again. I thought all dealer repairs carried a warranty.

Thanks for the replies. The faulty sensor now is the one before the catalytic sensor. I don't have the part number of the part which was replaced in may, so I'll try to contact the dealers to get more details about the repairs. I have a 2.0L engine.

I contacted the dealer . apparently they changed the sensor which is again faulty now. The warranty doesn't apply to any good will repairs, so I have to pay for the sensor this time.

I still think that they have just cleared the fault and claimed the money to BMW without changing the part.

does anyone heard of a o2 sensor going bad after less than 2 months?

They are very sensitive to dirt etc. If they got grease on it as they fitted it it could cause it to fail.
