New cameras to trap tailgaters
The next generation of enforcement cameras will have powers above and beyond recording straightforward speeding offences.

The so-called ASSET cameras now under development will be able to record five common traffic offences, ranging from speeding to tailgating, failure to display a valid tax disc, not having insurance or failing to wear a seatbelt.

That’s not all either. Technology is also under development that can even record whether your tyres and brakes are in safe and legal condition by measuring the heat signature with thermal imaging cameras.

This does address the common criticism that speed cameras are a blunt tool and can’t address many of the equally common – and potentially more dangerous – misdemeanours many motorists commit.

Currently ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras mounted by the road and in some Police cars can check whether a car is taxed, MOT’d or insured. And the traditional speed cameras are effective at catching speeding motorists.

But the new ASSET cameras, under development by a pan-European body of scientists and researchers, will be able to combine the roles of ANPR and speed cameras into one single unit.

Broadening the scope of enforcement cameras in this way does, it’s clear, help address the menace of uninsured drivers and those who persist in driving too close to the car in front.

Clearly law-abiding motorists have nothing to fear from the new cameras, due on test in 2013. But those fearing increased Big Brother style law enforcement may find this increased automation of traffic policing disturbing.

All sounds good to me.

About time they automated the clearance of uninsured/non taxed cars from the road.

As for the Big Brother bit, I am neither an undercover agent nor Bin Laden so I could not give a toss who knows where I am.

No worries here on this stuff. Get rid of more of the uninsured, untaxed and bald tyred cars if possible.
Won't be long before the ECU has a GPS based system linked into it that controls speed by various zones, distance from the car in front, etc. etc.

Trouble is it won't make a jot of difference to those with contempt for the law. They'll still buy £500 cars run them until nicked then get another once scrapped. Cheaper than the fines and insurance/tax.

Without the car being insured but only the person, how could you detect uninsured driving as such?

Although I did read that they are finally planning to make car insurance compulsory, which is a great step forward (and only running 40 years behind the rest of Europe ...).

It's already compulsory isn't it ?

Not yet. You can have an uninsured car in your garage if you wanted, it is not compulsory to insure a car which is not on a public road.

I should have made it more clear that I meant to say: "car based insurance to be made compulsory"

This is a great idea as long as it's nit all about speeding! However having to insure a sorn seems odd!

Personally I would prefer them to catch drivers using mobile phones whilst driving rather than those not wearing a seat belts cos they make me

Will be the same as the speed camera's in cats eyes, automatic GPS speed regulation, etc etc.
I won't hold my breath....

With respect to the OP, these cameras are already on test in Finland and due on sale in 2013.

Not sure I agree with them, I'm just going through a bit of anti technology phase at the moment or at least technology for the sake of it rather than moving anything forward or improving what we already have.

I still feel a higher visable Police presence on the roads would solve many of the problems.

As cj10 has said this will still not catch the persistent infringers who have no respect for the law. If they are fixed cameras they will drive a different way to avoid them.

I guess im like everyone and would like to cherry pick, im all for the non insured, taxed etc getting nicked, tailgaters I hate so they would get it too, as for speed cameras etc cant common sense over income prevail, put as many as you like around schools, built up areas, anywhere where there are children and older people, REAL accident black spots, hey ho I dream on :D

I'm jsut confused on how they will be able to tell if your brakes are worn by the heat signatures (I can understand tires). I'd think all one would have to do is not use your brakes.....
