Nurburgring Write up and Pics

Got back from the ring a couple of weeks ago thought i would get round to posting pics and a price guide if any one is thinking of doing it themselves.

Price wise this is baised on total cost per car from Oxford to Dover, Dover to Dunkerque (ferry) and Dunkerque to Bonn (we stayed with a mates parents to avoid hotel costs, but its on 30miles from the ring)

Specialist track day insurance £150 (per day)
Total petrol cost for whole trip £165
Ferry £50 (return)
All-encompasing brakedown cover £60
4 laps of the ring £77.50 (89 euros)

Total cost £502.50
I was fortunate enough to split this with a mate.

My best lap time, i'll start with the excuses 1st! my best time was the 1st ever lap of the ring i've done (there was a 911 and a 3er stuffed up in the barriers slowing the pace to about 30mph for 2 sections) i wasn't driving flat out, because there really is no room for error and i'm not an experienced track driver.

With those 2 excuses I did a 10.42 if there was no crashes and i was going for it i would have obviously been in the low 8s though! :rofl:

Top tip aswell - Play lots of driving games on the PS3 :thumbsup: / Xbox360 :thumbsdown:
I bought a Z4 on Gran Tourismo, did the same mods to the car as i have to my Z, and did asmany laps as I could, it gets boring but i found i knew the track layout really well, but just drove alot slower than the game! i got a 8.22 on the game btw!

Awesome write-up, thanks for the Pics! Looks like a lot of fun.....seriously considering this myself. One question, what days did you go to the track? The reason I ask is because Ive heard people complaining that it was so busy and congested that you can't actually give it a good go?
 
Looks like you had a good time.

I love going the 'Ring, it's just a pity that there seems to be more & more accidents and thus closures. I've even curtailed my UK trackdays (not that I did more than a couple in the Z4 anyway) so that I can afford more 'Ring trips.

We (group of 6) usually do a long weekend, and if we don't include the cost of missing 2 day's work (3 of us are self-employed) it costs about £1400 a trip.

That's a total of about 10 tanks of petrol (£600), 25 laps of the 'Ring (£425), 3-4 nights in the Waldhotel (£90-£120), food & drink (£100), oil change (£100), ferry (£37 return). If you don't fill up at Ed's then you can save about 10-15c per super-unleded litre by going to the Aral station in Adenau - and if you need it, you can get 102 RON there as well (mate's SKyline runs the highest he can find).

BTW, for next time, this is not where you want to be just as you're entering Fuchsrohre :P

If you're looking for quiet track time, then weekends are now out of the question. Best bet is to find a week when its open (even for a couple of hours) on a Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, followed by a full weekend. That way you'll get vey quiet track time Wed/Thur, busier on Fri, plus giving you the chance to enjoy the weekend atmosphere without feeling the need to lap.

I've done many weekday and or late season laps without seeing another vehicle.

My trips now consist of at least 2 weekdays plus the weekend, without me going to the track at the weekend, instead I spend time exploring the region or spectating at the various viewing points.

My last trip (Sept 11) in a 2.5 I did around 1100 miles, hotel in Adenau 40euros a night, P&O ferry £64, beer and food £120 ish, 2x4 lap tickets 178 euros.

Thanks for the tip, the reason i didn't film it is because my lines were awful, i was more worried about looking in my mirror to avoid the tens of overtaking cars!

Yep, they are just my track wheels, painted with halfrauds anthracite wheel paint, to hide the brake dust, was really pleased with how they look though! And cheap as chips to buy off eBay with decent tyres on!

How did you find the Neuro Disney experience?

I have been going since 2001 with my old 911 and about 8-10 friends, last year we went and found it really too busy though, it's a shame really how it's changed with the Ring Card and Ring Werks etc, i think the new owners are milking it, we do a euro trip every year calling in at Spa then onwards to the Ring staying at the Dorint but next year we are going to travel on a new route towards the Alps, you are welcome to join us! :D

What do you mean Neuro Disney? I know they've got all sorts there by the info centre but we didn't go in, just got a pic out the front! The track was all we went 4!

Neuro Disney is a phrase used to call the new experience, due to the fact that all the souvenirs have the Ring outline on them, from mugs to thimbles, just like Euro Disney :) sell, sell sell!!!
 
Whilst 'Nuro Disney' is tacky at it's tackiest and a serious flop when it comes to interest, especially with the roller coaster still not working, it isn't responsible for the huge increase in numbers. Brit numbers increased massively post the Ring appearing on Top Gear and then got busier and busier as car manufacturers started quoting Ring times in their press blurb.
It seemed to take off in numbers during the early to mid 2000's.

Personally, I stay away from the corporate stuff as much as possible and stay, drink and eat at the more established local places.
 
A Z4 forum trip there is very doable, and I'd be happy to organise, however getting commitment from people always seems very difficult.

Thanks, there were 4 Z4's there on the day I went. I was the only UK 1, 2 were M's, 2 were 3.0 with aero bumper!
