Number Plate Mount Deleted

Never been a fan of the cheap looking plastic mounts on any modern car and the E86 is no exception. Plate now held on with Guru Auto-Mount Number Plate Tape which is thinner than most of the foam alternatives and covers the entire back of the plate.

The Mount is held on with 5 rivets which are easily drilled out in a few seconds and off it pops. Stored away. I have a Rivet gun so can always reverse the 'mod' but I think it looks much cleaner without it and love how the line now tapers away giving a subtle nod back to the shark nose days of classic BMWs. There are loads of adhesive tapes out there but I just like how thin the foam is of Guru-Auto Mount and that it's not just a couple of pads but one plate sized piece.

When I bought the Z and the 335 I told them NO back plate and screw holes as I wanted to fit a narrow (legal plate) - I got the clap trap about plates dropping off ! They haven’t yet

My Disco 3 had them stuck on with tape and never dropped off.

I would vouch for the Guru Auto Mount tape, it's great! The E89 has a kind curved front bumper and I tried various tape but due to the curve they kept coming off. I finally fitted the plate using this Guru Auto Mount tape and so far so good! OP you are right the car looks much cleaner without the mount.

That's an extra 35 bhp right there with the aerodynamic improvement and the reduction in weight!

It's a ZunSport Grille. It was on the car when I bought it together with a set to cover the Kidney Grilles too but they're now in a box as I fitted some new Matt Black Grilles.

Ah ok. I’m not a fan of the mesh kidney grilles but the lower part looks smart in black.

Yes. Luckily the holes are well within the outer border of the both the black plastic mount and the number plate so there is nothing showing once you re-attach the plate. You'd only have an issue if you had a shorty horizontal plate. My Halfords plate already seemed to have a natural curve in it too so it fit perfectly to the contour of the body. Not sure if this is the same for pre facelift E85s?

Had all the screw holes smoothed off when I got the bumper painted . I use a static plate .

Finally got round to copying this idea and drilling out the 5 rivets holding the plate holder on.

For completeness think I might fill the holes (I’ve got 7 - five from the holder and another 2) and colour them with touch up pen...before sticking plate back on.
