Number Plate LED Bulbs

Just a quick one.. one bulb out so I'm looking to upgrade the number plates to LED. Read quite a few threads but they are all fairly old, it seems people where buying newer LED units from newer BMW's and retro fitting. Is this still the case... as I've had a quick browse and I've come across these can-bus free bulbs https://www.hids-direct.co.uk/501-w5w-5w-cree-canbus-led-extremely-bright-sidelight-bulbs/

Will these just plug and play in the original unit? Or will I have to buy the newer LED units
 
I bought some 1 series licence bulbs holders. You do have to change the connector over, can't remember the part numbers unfortunately but it was about 5 years ago.

All,OEM parts though.
 
You can have the mega rice 50W LEDs off the bay

Or go OE (2 of each required, don't muller the connectors, they require thought and dexterity):

Going to nip to Halfrauds and get some of these..

Hopefully they won't be too bright... but brighter than standard. This is assuming they actually fit and work :rofl:

If that doesn't work out I'll buy some of the 1 series holders and attempt to change the connectors over, no idea what I'm doing when it comes to electrics though

The imply need unclipping with the connector pin pushing down and removing. They are quite small though.

Use the OE imho. Might be twice the price of the ebay units, but do it right and do it once.

No need to change the connector, you break a black tab on the connector and it fits perfectly. So I did, I bought x2 them here:

I sell LED bulbs here in Spain and this is 100% correct practically all BMW models do not monitor the license plate light so canbus bulbs are not required.

The aftermarket LED license plate lights (complete unit not just bulbs) are great but can be way too bright. I find the LED bulbs give just the right amount of light alternatively for factory look you can fit the genuine BMW LED license plate lights.

por eso le digo que pille los oem que no hace falta cambiar el conector de matricula

that's why I tell him to catch the oem that it is not necessary to change the license plate connector

I dislike the butchery! Though of course it is only there so the polarity is correct.

The aliexpress link is excellent if they are genuine.

the ones from aliexpress I wear them and they are excellent they are genuine. and the cut to the connector is very small, it can be broken with scissors or pliers. in half a second it is done and you connect. It doesn't influence polarity because it only fits one way like the original.
 
So i ended up getting the 35 lumen LED bulbs from Halfrauds, £7.50. I am actually very pleased with them, the white light is much more modern as opposed to the orange standard ones and they aren't ridiculously bright either!

These really aren't the best pictures but it gives you some kind of idea how they look. They actually aren't as bright in person either.

Right hand side has the LED bulb fitted, left the original.

They look good, just the right amount of brightness. :thumbsup:
