Ns-2r vs expensive semi slick options!

I've always rated the nankang ns2r semi slicks, excellent track tyre and insane price point, I'm pretty confident they cant be beaten for anywhere close to the price point, SO.... to put my theory to the test i decided to do a direct comparison to these bad bois that i picked up today.... Very interested in seeing the difference. if anyones actually interested and i my even do a video as I've still got a decent decent life in the nankangs and a trackday coming up, so after that illl swap over then book maybe a track evening at donny for something different.. How much better will they be?? looking at the tread i can say, i don't think they will last very long.

I'll be interested to see how you get on with them, time wise and longevity. I've been running the ns2-r 120 compound and whilst I found them to offer good grip they didn't last very long at all. 2 and a half track days and 1000 road miles or so.
Just put on a set of the 180 compound to compare. At the price, as you say they are great, but perhaps it's a false economy if toyos or cup2s for instance last a lot longer.
Most of these cheaper track rubber I get the impression is aimed at lighter cars than ours.

yeah i agree .... I'm currently on the 180 compound nankangs and they've last really well ( at the front) the rears... toasted very quickly.

felt very painful paying for these compared to the nankang.

Yokohama advan ad08r are supposed to be the dogs danglies as are the Toyo 888r

Only even been in a car with either Michelin cup or cup2 and the advans.

While the cups are the daddy the ad08 were brilliant and you could really feel them pulling along even as a passenger.

currently hidden in garage as my fiancé will kill me if she see's these....

I hear ya mate ;-)

yup finances are tight, potentially new baby on the way and the house isn't finished.... and I've spending on tyres for a car i use once or twice a week... really wouldn't go down well.

I'm interested to see how you find them on the Zed. I'm on my second set of 120 compound NS2-rs and I really rate them (Thruxton ate the first set). I have R888s on my Westy and they're in a different league, but that's helped by it being only 40% of the weight of the Zed.

Anyone planning on trying the new Nankank AR-1?

I wanted to but they're not available in my sizes yet. Rear 265/35 r18 are, 235/40 is not, only a 225/40 atm. 235 is due Q4 this year.

Fwiw i REALLY rate them too... I've recommended them to so many and most say the same, i was disappointed to hear that a member on hear really wasn't keen on them and actually said the pilot super sport was offering more dry grip, i don't no how thats possible , one a summer tyre and ones a track tyre designed for dry speed.....

the nankangs are imo awesome, i am sick however of the wealthy porsche and ferrari owners sniggering at my tyre choice very session i go on, tyre snobbery is insane...

This is what I used to use as the 'cheap' option on my 1700kg e34 M5.

Silverstone S585 tarmac rally tyre

They weren't terrible in the wet either, but I only ever used them on track as I carried a full set of wheels & tyres in the back of the M5 so didn't have to be picky.

Did try R888s once, but they lasted about 4 hours and were down to the steel bands.

Also managed get my hands on 17 part-worn, ex Carrera Cup Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres for £70. I think it cost more in petrol to drive the 60 miles each way in 3 trips to pick them all up.

Got no chance of any deals like that nowadays

Always hard to compare tyres, I've often read on forums about someone who says 'the new X tyres they had fitted are much better than the Y's they were using previously', usually because the old ones are old and have lost the performance they once had.
For the money I think the NS2R is a decent performance tyre and certainly has more dry grip than the Contisports I had before (fell into my own trap), but that is coming at a cost of durability, wearing out far quicker. I've also noticed the front inside edges are wearing in a 'sawtooth' pattern on the road (annoying drone), despite swapping them off the rims and personally setting the tracking twice. A hard track session seems to wear them smooth again though.
My guess is that the R888R will be far superior in lap time, certainly when comparing one of the M3 Cup cars that races with us first on the NS2R before swapping to Dunlop Direzza, interested to know how you get on. :)
