Novice hoping to buy an electric polisher

Had my 108's refurbed yesterday and got chatting to the chap who machine polishe one of my headlights and a small area on the front wing and i was impressed
he gave me some basic advice and now im going to get my first ever electric polisher and do the whole car SO does anyone have any words of advice or tips to get me started please??

i have seen several posts about expensive polishing power tools however I need a starter pack but have set my self a budget of £80 for everything pads, machine etc
any recommendations or cheap deals spotted recently?
 
as a novice car polisher myself just go easy on the machine polisher ? depending which 1 they can "burn" through the lacquer & leave you requiring proper paint overhaul ?

Just had a look,it seems to cover most of the specification I have read about, im not clear if I need to buy any accessories to get me started.

What will i need a basic starter kit?
 
I went to visit a local detailer with my first DA and he kindly talked through a lot and watched me do my first panel and find out what compounds and pad combo was best. I'm more comfortable doing it on my own now :D

You will need a cutting polish, finishing polish and a final finish polish

Plus at least 3 pads fir the different stages

You will need the machine, backing plate for the size pads you have

Having just completed a hands on machine polishing intro course today, my recommendation would be to get some hands on training before buying lots of kit to try out DA and rotary polishers. Having never completed any machine polishing before today, but now having tried out both DA and rotary machine polishers, I would go for a quality rotary polisher. There's a lot of 'fear' factory around rotary polishers, but get some training and use the cutting pads/polish correctly and you shouldn't have any issues, especially on the harder BMW paint finishes.
 
Think I read this advice on here but before you start on your pride and joy buy a cheap panel from a scrappy and practice or make mistakes on that part.

+1 or practice on one of your relatives cars
 
ok this may sound a little defeatist but im going off the idea of the machine polishers now, im not looking for a new car standard paintwork as after all my car is a 2003 model worth less than 6k but i just wanted to improve the shine a little bit more.

Im not sure if all seems a little bit of snobbery or perfectionism (sorry if that sounded a little harsh that was not my intention) but i wonder if a cheap machine will do me for my needs

If you're not fussed about swirl removal, a DA and simple Auto Glym Super Resin Polish will give you good results. Depending on your car colour, Poorboys Black Hole and White Diamond Glaze are very good, particularly with a DA :thumbsup:
 
Just buy a cheap DA like a Kestrel..

If you look on Ebay there are a couple of shops doing Dodo juice buff daddy and a couple of pads and polish/cutting polish for around £150..

Buy one and see how you go,if you dont like it sell it on at detailing world and you will get most of your money back..

if you do like it,then you can make a few quid doing your friends card when the see how good yours looks..;)

I have some light swirls in certain lights on the bonnet but nothing major, been reading other threads and might try SRP and then some sort of sealant wax as an an idea
