notchy gearbox

just got my z4 and was a little surprised that the G/box not as smooth or crisp as expected, no receipt for a clutch so maybe that, 155,000miles.

That isn't surprising.

I'm currently on my 7th and 8th manual BMWs and have found smoothness of operation varies from one to another, 1st to 2nd being usually the most troublesome change. None of mine has needed a clutch during my ownership so unless you have other symptoms of clutch issues I doubt that will be a factor.

BMW claim the gearboxes are sealed for life, but sometimes having the gearbox oil renewed can help.

And welcome to the forum!

Changing the fill for life oil is the first thing to try, usually gives the desired result, if your not sure what to put in there check with Opie Oils online. https://www.opieoils.co.uk/products-for-your-vehicle.aspx
Use the forum discount if you order from them.

As above replacing the ‘lifetime’ fluid is a good idea as it may not have been done. A shorter weighted knob can help, the ZHP is a common replacement. Removing the clutch delay valve helps as well and is very simple to do.

As above, I had a notchy box. Replaced oil, removed cdv and installed forum member Buckley06's knob and it couldn't be smoother now. Well, at least until the gearbox oil warms up...

Thanks everybody, cdv delete and new oil it is, weighted knob WTF is that?

There are a few options, but I've fitted a ZHP gear-knob to my last two Z4s and it is much better than the standard one. It's a fair bit heavier and a bit shorter.

Here's a link to the 6-speed one, but you can also get 5-speed ones. You might get one slightly cheaper from Cotswold BMW or Sopers of Lincoln as they give a forum discount - just quote the part number on the link if you need a 6 speed!
