just in general but especially in cold, shifting gets little rough and notch.
changed the fluid 10k ago thinking it might go away but same

any of your trans do the same?

2.5l 5spd manual

thanks

What fluid did you change to? The M gearbox is dead notchy, I changed the fluid to Royal Purple at it improved no end, still a bit notchy when cold but miles better

i changed to redline ATF D4 recommended by E46's

hoping it would make it better but nope still notch as hell. E46's i drove were smoooth!

If it's any consolation Black, mine's notchy too  . No biggie, you're not the only one. Doesn't bother me at all, I like it just the way it is with no mods.

Mine was also notchy, especially second, so mentioned it to the garage when it went in for a service ... the mechanic test drove it and agreed ... they changed the lubrication (not sure what to) and it's better ... not perfect, but I don't worry about it any more :D

Try the Redline MTL. It helped mine.
Hey there GaryD...
What Redline did you use, .....D4ATF?
& is Redline tinted.

For warranty, I'm reluctant to use something that doesn't look the same as OE

D4 ATF is also recommended for the M. The Redline MTF is the one to use in all BMW manual transmissions (IMHO).

thanks for the link....

LOL.... it's getting more confusing than ever.
I got this email from Redline;
Ian,

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in your Z4 manual transmission
I would recommend the D4ATF, a suitable replacement for the original
MTF-LT-2 fluid.
