Not turning over

Morning. Had no choice but to warm up the Zed for the run to the office this morning, however, the engine won’t turn over. Turned auto lights off and radio etc., but I can hear the alternator clicking but nowt else. Currently looking for some jump leads. I had the alternator replaced last year but I don’t think the battery so maybe that’s knackered? Last few starts it’s been a bit laggy to turnover cold but absolutely fine when starting warm/after a drive.

Sounds like a sticky solenoid in the starter motor. You can try to hit it with a hammer if you can reach it, but other than that only a replacement will fix that.

Can you trickle charge the battery? Jump starts can kill the centre airbag module

I haven’t got one but maybe an Amazon job and do it tomorrow - or have a trip to Halfords. Was thinking of getting one anyway; recommendations?

Just Whatsapp'd you the link to the one I got from Amazon.
It is a great bit of kit, intelligent charging too.

I used a lidl special battery charger for a few years which was okay, replaced with a CTEK MXS 5.0 (Amazon link) a couple of years ago and it's been rock solid. Charged anything I've thrown it at so far, still going strong. In theory it'll "regen" if you ask it to, which they suggest doing once a year to maintain battery performance but I've never bothered.

Thanks Martin. And ordered to arrive tomorrow. Just one of those situations where we are down to one car for 48hrs now :?

Even though the battery and the charger are a must anyway, those were the symptoms of my car before Martin replaced the starter motor. Cold, it was a very slow affair whilst warm it was fine. The starter fixed that issue, but if the battery in your case is unknown than that is a cheaper and easier test in any case.

At least the M54 is easier to swap starters on.

Well, it’ll be Sod’s Law that it’s the starter motor but I guess I’ll start with charging the battery from tomorrow overnight. Then replace battery. Then have a little cry and move to starter motor replacement. :driving:

If the starter motor is starting to give up then only a really good battery will be able to turn it.
I changed the starter on Vall's a couple of years back and dismantled the old one just for interest.
This is what I found.
So much debris worn off the brushes that I'm surprised anything could move in there!

Uuurgh. No wonder it’s wasn’t effective.

Thinking about it, it’s only the last couple of weeks, so maybe last 4 starts before today, had it been a bit laggy that I’d noticed. But I guess I’ll know more when I charge the current battery.

She’s aliiiiive!! Let’s see how long the battery stays at a reasonable level or be replaced.
Mayber you just don't do a long enough journey to replace the charge used to start the car.

One before last was a couple hours but generally I expect you’re right. But now I have the charger I don’t have to worry about being time poor.
