got in the car this morning , put key in dash up comes yellow warning 'Park brake failed' , look at handbrake button no red LED and no sound if I press/push it , fairly positive that it was on when I parked last night , spoke to dealer service dept , they seem to think it is the switch itself that is the issue , they can take car Friday or week Monday if I want a loan car. Not the end of the world I know but fairly annoying

Has it failed in the 'off' position at least? Then you can use the car and leave it in Park to stop it rolling?

Thats the weird thing got home last parked up put brake on and im 95% confident that brake switch led was on when exited the vehicle (believe it stays on for 30 secs?) this morning deader than your averidge dodo , that was my first concern that it had died and left handbrake on but luckily not , so yes I can use park to stop it rolling.
I can only guess that putting the key in this morning has caused something to go pop

Worth a quick check of the connector has come loose?

Use something blunt to prise up the very back of the console trim, open the armrest first, then just use fingers. It's really easy to do

Ahhh... Best of luck.only took 4 1/2 months in a dealer to sort out this problem on my 5 series :| they had a nightmare finding it. Kept resetting itself when cycling the ignition. Have you got pro nav?

When it failed on my car,the dealers were unable to find any fault,4 or 5 times. So,I was driving along and " handbrake fault appears" I contacted BMW assist through connected drive, they were able to interrogate the car, download the list of faults and email it to the dealer. Sorted problem the next visit. Incedently, one of the faults was a bonnet switch. If a doors open on my 5 series it won't release the handbrake. May be worth doing the same yourself to give the dealer a head start?

Good thing is you will be covered, friend of mine paid over a grand to sort out his brake on his Land Rover :( :(
