Not looking forward to tomorrow

Sunday 22nd September is the day when our only child leaves and goes off to University in Sheffield. We (her mum and I) are absolutely dreading it.

Some may know that our daughter was a twin. Her twin brother died as a very young baby due to a major cock up at the hospital during their birth. So our daughter (Emily) has been our world for the last eighteen years.

Now she is leaving us. I don't know how we will cope TBH.

Just thought I would share this, as I don't know who else to tell how gutted I am!

You will be glad to see the back of her when she goes back after Christmas. Students are like feckin locusts!!! I’m glad I have my kitchen cupboards back to myself

I didn’t like it either at the time, and then again when they come back and leave again to live somewhere else.

Uni is in the past and my son works in the company as well so I see him almost every day. My daughter lives 20 minutes away and see her every week now she has a baby.

But if it was my choice, they would both still live at home

I was very upset when my two went off to Uni, my son first to Aberystwyth and my daughter a few years later to Lancaster. Don’t worry Pondrew, mine were both okay. My son is living in Japan and very happy, we see him once a year and my daughter is working in Wales and also very happy, she comes home all the time. . I am very proud of both of them and had they not gone to Uni I doubt they would have had the same opportunities. It’s very difficult after years of nurturing them to let them fly the nest but it’s life unfortunately. Your daughter will be fine, make new friends and become the woman you will also be proud off. It’s a new beginning for you both, upsetting though it is now, when you go to her graduation in a few years time it will be the proudest moment in your life.

Not the best of times for you both, but they need to do it if they want too. My daughter, 23, phoned me every day, sometimes for an hour, sometimes 2 mins. She’s graduated, has a good job (lives 2hrs away) and still calls almost every day. Son lived 5 mins away and I hear from him (text) nearly every day but he works away and see him every couple of weeks.

Only advice I would give re daughter is if at all possible, really discourage her from coming home for the first 2/4 weeks. That’s when they make friends and start their social lives, especially if in halls. My daughter was struggling at the start, as was I, when she went so I went to her for lunch for a couple of hrs weeken 1 and 3, seemed to work for us.

The one thing she’ll know is you are both there for her

One of our granddaughters is starting her second year at Sheffield. She has been showing new starters round. If Emily needs a point of contact we could probably set something up Andy.

Yes Ella Ind, (my granddaughter) is reading Maths and Physics at Sheffield Uni. She’s a lovely, gentle sort of a girl. Not that I am biased in any way you understand. I’m sure that Emily will be fine but should she need someone to talk to at any time I could sort something.

Having had dogs, cats and children I can vouch that it’s much easier to keep a cocker spaniel. Although not that much cheaper these days with what vets charge.

True. We have rarely had to take our daughter to the vet. Only once when she got a nasty case of fleas (I blamed her mother).
