Not including the Z4

MMMMM, thats an eye opener for anyone thinking of going down that route. I had a V8 twin turbo esprit and that was nowhere near as expensive to maintain. My r33 gtr was about on par with the BMs, My hand was always in my pocket...wasnt cheap to buy either!!!

Tref, why did you get rid of the T350?

We just bought a second home and I wanted to make sure I had the cash available for the final payment (recession looming etc.), so i sold the TVR in January. The theory was also to make me try other cars. The Z4 was bought as a fun roadster for summer blasts and trips down to the Alps. I'm not sure how long it will stay though...

I may end up back at TVR one day...

I've looked through your history on PH just now (you'll see my post in the BBQ thread) - The costs of running a TVR are certainly a 'tad' higher, aren't they!...

Not liking the Z then?

Compared to a Z4 yes. Compared to a similar performance car no. Try adding up how much you'd spend on most performance cars, including depreciation (which I don't usually include, but PH does). I tend to write the value off when I buy a car (in this case when I spent £40k I predicted/planned for it to be worth £20k after 3-4 years).

26mpg taking it easy, 22mpg in fast driving, £600 minor, £1000 major services, insurance £350 p.a. (5,000 miles limit). Guy who bought it from me says nothing has needed fixing since he got it in Jan. New brake pads and MOT at service time was it.

Oh, and £6k if the engine goes... :D

I don't dislike the Z4 at all. Its nice. However, its a bit like a bit of horizontal with Kylie after a rampant weekend with Angelina and Kelly Brook...

How often do the engines go? Servicing costs are fairly painful!

I definitely understand your last comment! I really wanted a T350c until I heard about the running costs! :D

There is no rule about if and when they go. Some last 50k, some last 15k. A lot depends on the owner, but early Speed Sixes had design flaws. 2004/2005 engines are best. To be honest it never worried me.

If I got another TVR I'd be fitting a 445hp/380lbft TVR Power 4.3 Speed Six engine :driving:

If you are talking about something without big running costs (like the Z4) and with similar amounts of practicality (as in useable everyday) then these would be my choices:

1120916-4.jpg

2005 Clio V6 £12,950
Very individual, rare, much more of a pertrolheads car than the Z4.

2002 Boxster 3.2S £14,000
Quicker, better handling and feels higher quality than the Z4. Bigger running costs though and looking dated now. Anniverasry model still looks nice but maybe just over the budget?

2005 350Z £13,600
Quick and still look tidy.

Stuff I like but are not everyday, practical and cheap to run...

Always look at these too but as an everyday car? Not for me:

Saw one on the M25 last week and it still looked amazing:

And like others have said, Tamora – just think the thought of the engine popping would leave me walking around with a turtles head most of the time. Not convinced they are as quick as TVR claimed but who cares after you hear it:

Mk1 Ford Focus RS, Ford Focus ST 2/3, Nissan 350Z... for every day practicality anyway. Fun, sexy and practical :)

Tammy and a warranty, but they have gone up lots. I saw a fair few going for £12,000 in January, now they are all back up near £15,000+

Wish I'd got one now on the residual front :D
I would CERTAINLY have wanted a warranty with it too though!

Dave

Well it depends on what you want from a car!! Silly post really without more specific details.

Personally I'd probably go for a Boxster S, maybe a Monaro, or a 350Z with TT conversion could be good.
