Not impressed

Mmn been reading about faulty roof motors, springs, corroding pipes and misting fogs. Well with the crap weather that we have been having i now have the first of these!! Misting fog lamps :headbang: Mexican components i believe?? This is my first BM and i have to say i am not impressed, German engineering and reliability eh?? My everyday car is a Vectra,, no such problems been good for 60,000 miles up to now. No misting fogs bla blah.
I suppose its being on my first forum that is bringing this type of stuff to my attention. Probably the same if i went on the relevent Vectra forum;;;; If there is one? :)
No comments on the Vectra please, we know Mr Clarkson hates them with a passion! Mind you he hates everything that does not come into the" supercar" category, does 0-60 in about three seconds and cost in excess of 100k

I don't know about others but I have had brakes pipe corrosion but would say its pretty standard on 8 year old car driven in the UK, one of the front fogs have misted up but i put that down to the fact I was running around for months with no cover on the inner wheel lining so water had been spraying the back. (it fell off when I clipped a curb) as for the roof motor no problems at all touch wood but I would put that down to where you park and how often the roof is cleaned since it is down to the drain getting blocked. I recently cleaned my drains out for the first time there was quite a bit of stuff in there but not as bad as I thought it would be for 8 years worth. I would put that down to the fact the roof gets jetwashed nearly every week so the drains get lots of water through them which likely self cleaned, and it was never parked under trees and where anything can eventually get into the drains and block them. One side had a lot of mud and renovo roof paint gunk in it though. It should be part of the inspection 2 to clean the roof drains IMO. I had 2 rear springs go within the first few years but only when i had 18's on and RFT. The problem went away as soon as I got rid of those RFT everything else has been rock solid. :driving:

And probably has one of the worst chassis, But nm.

Anyway unfortunately this is one of its traits. There are some fixes... but buy yourself a Z4M bumper instead then there will be no problem

Whats up with the chassis? I thought it was regarded as very stiff? :-) Its the only car I have ever jacked a front wheel up and the rear has lifted up higher haha  Agree on the Z4M bumper.... its crazy how around 2000 everyone had to have foglights the car was considered more stylish with the foglights, now it seems its better without looking at all the new models...

Here's our Top Gear Top Tip: If you want boring and reliable, buy a Vectra. If you want fun and exciting, buy a BMW.

I love Vectra's... I have earned a good living fixing them over the years.

Many we have "written off" at 5-6 years old due to being uneconomical to repair.. The parts and labour bill just outweighs the resale value.

That said,i realise where the OP is coming from... BMW quality and reliability isnt as good as it used to be,but still better than most.

I wouldnt really be complaining if my only fault was a steamy foglight..

Open the back cover and leave the fogs on for a while will clear them.

My headlights mist up in winter... Always have, not sure why!

Despite its faults its still a great :driving:

Yes it is great driving, and yes only the fog lights have steamed up that because its been in a garage for most of its life. Only covered 12500 mile on an 06 it's like new. What would it be like with 60k on the clock like my vectra tho.

If you catch it in time, you can get to the inners before they corrode badly. Clearly a terrible design, but catching it in plenty time will help

Shame on you for comparing the ZED to a vectra.

My 08 plate Z4C on 30k miles has had replacement springs (i used this opportunity to lower the car) and my foggys also mist up, I see it on BM's all the time, not just the Z4. (you could try using them if it bothers you that much?)

Being 21 I have friends who love their vauxhall sticker edition cars and they are constantly in the garages with this and that going wrong due to pants build quality, id count yourself rather lucky for the minor defects mentioned above!

My last car was a Tiburon V6, of a Hyundai Coupe if you like.

I considered it a surprisingly well-built and reliable machine. It had its common flaws, sometimes drivetrain-related (clutch, dual-mass flywheel, crankshaft bearings, head gasket, you name it), but if you were lucky, you got only one of these at a time. Although it was a cheap car, fixing the whole host of issues could prove expensive, even though the parts were a real bargain.

The BMW, although I imagine it could have better interior materials, seems to come from another planet. True, there are some common glitches, but they are non-essential and can be cheaply fixed (rattling cupholders -fixed; foggy fog lamps - replaced with quality OSRAM DRLs; springs - fixed by the dealer).

When I compare the bimmer with, say, my friend's Range Rover or my colleague's Brera, it seems quite bullet-proof. I've seen a couple of 350z's - flywheel issues on most of them, crankshaft bearing trouble due to insufficient lubrication, rattling interior. In comparison, the Zed seems to have stood the test of time much better, at least by the deteriorating modern standards.

We defend the Zed, for all it's faults, because it has character. Yes mine has been to the dealer more than a few times with minor faults but love it all the same, just about to hit 65,000 miles

A little aggressive dont you think :poke: I just expected a little more build quality wise. The build quality of the Vextra is every bid a s good as the zed, having said that i love the zed style, fun to drive etc thats why i bought it and would not be without it. As i said in my original thread because its a BM i expected a little better. :)

If you think BMW is bad, try Audi................................ :poke: In fact any VAG product. No where near as rocksolid as you'd expect, the opposite is quite often true.

No i dont want to do that, i love the car and its looks i suppose they all have their issues, am just a little dissapointed with what to me are simple engineering oversites. I probably expect too much, having said that i would be reluctant to part with it. :)
