Not Happy with MPG

Disappointed Stuart. I'm getting 27mpg in my 3 litre. You must be breaking IMmie on gently ;)

28 here, and loving it............what is this economy thing you are all talking about? Was it an extra on E89's? :D

The horses need feeding, if you dont have the dosh for the hay get less horses.

old models 2.5 I got 32. no difference in petrol ron 95 or 97 No real difference how I drove it, fast down hilly roads or 45mph down flat A6 just did around 32 mpg.

I had a coice which way I drove to work 19 miles each way down flat slow A6 from Derby to Matlock following HGVs taking over 45 mins or 23 miles around the tops at 60mph + 30 mins I always went the hill and fun way

New 3.0 auto the fun way way around 25 mpg so thats over £10 per week so tried several ways to bring up the MPG. Found SPORTS mode and manual shift I could pull 3 mpg back and A6 slow way up to 31mpg. ron 97 or BP the better petrol but the ron 97 did not give the return on the additional cost of around 8%. So If I was running late in the morning it was the fun way and always returned home A6 slow.

As I am already bleeding dosh away on depreciation, like 3K I did not want to splash £500 extra per year up the wall in petrol.

One major issue with auto is you cant select 6th at 30mph but 36 so always run in a lower gear than ideal.

NEW 2.8 Im averaging 34 with more fun days so up 6 mpg on the 3.0. If I go A6 only im pushing 38, thats over 30% less in petrol, like Johnny ball says you do the maths, £20 per week thats over £1000 per year with more fun than pulling a heavy 3.0 which goes to the depreciation pot or a new boiler. Hay I can upgrade my coffin with silk interior, unsure if I want red or cream, I have always had red leather interiors.

The computer shows 36.2 with 34.5 actual so not too bad difference.

Popped in ron 97 today and the dam computer is showing 47 mpg for the A6 trip after 40 miles, if thats right Im on to £1800 per year saving on the 3.0 auto.

Must admit when tank level was at 50% in the 3.0 I would be doing well at 160 miles and petrol reminder (60 mile range) at 280 miles. I am now over 230 miles half tank and 340 miles with 60 to go.

So with the 2.0 turbo we only need a bit of hay for the few horses for the normal driving around, over a third of them are waiting in the pen resting and sleeping saving energy but when we want to play and punch the floor the horses suddenly they appear and we can as much fun as a 3.0 without dragging all 245 of them around all the time.

I know I'll probably get flamed for this :fuelfire: ... but if they launched a refined, smooth diesel Z4, I would definitely buy one. That way you have a fantastic looking fuel efficient roadster all in the one package.

I'll get my coat. :exitright: :P

Well as Audi stick their VAG 2.0 diesel in everything they can including all their convertibles then I'm sure BMW are thinking about it. Slippery slope if you ask me although I get the business/finance logic.

I think if they were going to do it they'd have done it with the recent facelift because they introduced the S-Drive 18i at that point.

Not too up on the SLK range but haven't Merc resisted the temptation to introduce a diesel as well?

Depreciation hurts the pocket more than MPG.

Don't worry tho 'cos your coffin lid is nailed on for a long time! :)
So true.

If petrol is a big concern, buy a 3 year old Z. Save £15K.
Approx equivalent of 3 years free petrol. My man maths for the day. :)

Slk 250cdi
Although I wouldn't really be tempted by a diesel in a sports car, the power and economy is quite impressive.

Isn't misleading the customer against the law??? ;)

How many of the people that are worried and upset that their car can't meet these targets have actively chased the dealer to sort it out, or is it typical 'great' British spirit of moaning whilst doing bugger all to fix it?

Not about MPG, but there was a case in Germany where a customer took the manufacturer to court - and won - because his car was down on their quoted power figures...

So if the seller is claiming car A gets 50mpg and in real life it's closer to 30mpg.... Isn't that against the sale of goods act, and against the law?

I got a 3 months old 2.8 M sport and saved 12K 36K got it for less than 24K 30 miles.

I spent 3.3K per year on petrol so 10K in 3 years if I can pull 20% back thats 2K so hay I have saved 15K on a 3 month old car.

I understand what you mean but the figures the manufacturer quotes are legal requirements from the EU based on very specific testing requirements. They don't usually bear any relation to actual real-world MPG but that isn't the manufacturers fault - they'll only quote what they are told to. It is the EU test specification that needs changing to more closely reflect actual driving conditions. The worst one i've seen recently is Merc claiming the A45 AMG will do 40mpg!! yeah right, a 360hp 2-litre turbo is REALLY going to do that!!! I hope nobody is stupid enough to buy one based on that claim.

Mine is M sport 2013 2.0 model and on a 180 mile run of mixed country roads then back over the M62 I got 43.6 MPG on an engine that started the trip with 126 miles on it. I never went over 3000 rpm and never went over 65 on the M62 though.
I expect that figure to drop once it is run in.

What you have to remember is that Company car scheme managers purchase/allow on to the car list based on these figures.

Showing 40+mpg and reasonable (if unattainable) emissions figures gets you on the list, 25 mpg WILL NOT!

Live with the lower MPG and just enjoy the car...you will get the figures, or nearly, but it will be so tedious you will pray for death!

An experiement on the M40 on Sunday. My 28i MSport Auto with 1400 miles on clock and Sheel VPower Nitro feul. Not 100% scientific as road changes hill etc but.... I did a few runs of 5miles long using cruise control and resetting the jorney computer. The difference between 50mph and 70mph was around 15 mpg, of course I didn't check anything higher.... Also between Silverstone and M25 / A3 junction using cruise control set to 70mph and a fairly clear road got 48mpg.

Sketchley interesting results and can confer. I popped in ron97 flatish A6 last thursday I did 40 miles to and from work 40 to 50 mph fairly constant and it showed 47mpg.
Round town its hard to get 35mpg.
When cold for the first 5 mins this is way lower
So once warm and under 3K revs, gears 2,3 6 air con off its possible to push the mpg up. Since last thursday its dropped to 39mpg as 2 weekends and town short drives has pulled the mpg down.

Saying that its done over 330 miles since fill up and has more than a quarter left with range at 110 miles.
In my 10 plate 3.0 I would have put the petrol warning light on at 270 and at 300 indicator on all the time and at 330 running on fumes.

I reckon around 40-50 mph is the sweet spot where the mpg is at its highest. My overall average of town and motorway driving is around 34.4 mpg.
