Not going into gear from cold start

Just got my z4 on Friday 15th after having a lot of hassle with the garage fixing a steering wheel wobble. Got in the car the next again day looking forward too driving it and could not get the car into reverse gear or any other gear so the car was stuck on my driveway :( . Phoned the place where I bought the car they said too phone the rac who came about 45 mins later by the time the car had warmed up a bit and was going into gear but not smoothly at all especially 1st 2nd & 3rd gear. So took the car back down too the dealer where I bought it. He said he was going too take it to BMW first thing Monday morning but still not heard back yet what the problem is. Hopefully get it sorted and back on the road ASAP.

Sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaging. The gear synchronizers are powerful enough to block engagement if the clutch system needs fluid or bleeding.

sometimes mine is a bit stiff to get into first from cold. Knock it into second then it will slip into 1st.

there was a small discussion on this somewhere and a few others also experienced it too.

It wouldn't go in any gear at all. Didn't want too force it too much incase I broke something but when the car heats up a bit seems to go into gear easier but still doesn't feel smooth so there is defo a problem there somewhere.

Have you tried pumping the clutch? Press it a few times before engaging, makes mine go into gear easier when cold. But sound like you have other issues.

Tried that when I started it but didn't make a difference. Will just need too wait and see what it is hopefully they replace a few bits tho at the dealers cost

I had exactly ther same thing happen when i bought mine had clutch and fly wheel replaced which wasnt cheap then it happened again i have been told its the Clutch master cylinder as i bled the clutch and it was fine again for a week or so then same thing started to happen. I believe it is air getting into the system at some point either master or slave cylinder. I have bought a new master cylinder but not had it fitted yet, i have found that by pulling the clutch up with your hand and holding it until it stays there sorts the problem for a while it slike it resets it so give that a go first.

Thanks for the advice yeh will try that of its still the same. Got a couple of months warranty with it tho so will just keep taking it back till its sorted. Still waiting too hear from them at the moment wouldn't like too see the price of a clutch and slave fitted from BMW would cost a fortune.

Luckily i have a mate that works for Sytner BMW so got clutch and flywheel with parts for about £600 fitted but he told me if he was doing it at work it would be well over a £1K just for the Fly-wheel!!

Got a call back from the dealer earlier surprise surprise they could not find a problem with the car but he did say they were going too take the gear box off and see if everything is working as it should. So hopefully they pick something up if not will need too get an independent check done on it too see what the problem is as there is defiantly something wrong there :(. Begining too wish I never bought this car.

Got a phone call from the garage today saying that the gear box on the car has failed so they will need too put a new gear box in the car. They said they could only put a second hand 1 in due too the cost so I have cancelled the deal and getting my old car back. Will be on the look out for another z but probs go for the 2.5 this time over the 2 litre.

Good result there, hopefully next time round you'll get something a little nicer! Enjoy the search :)

The garage got the z back with a reconditioned box and new clutch so decided to go down and test drive it again. The car felt so much better and just clicks into gear now so decided too buy it back :). Just hope it causes me no more problems. Here is some pics after washing it this morning.

Looks the part

The previous owner probably moved the car on because of a fault, it sounds like it's fixed so lets hope you get some hassle free motoring,
