Not a bad price for battery with 5YG

Varta and Bosch batteries are apparently the best. Personally I prefer Varta over Bosch but I think its down to preference and experience.

From that carbatteries website several options pop up :|

Would I be correct that the '278mm long, 175mm wide, 190mm high, 12V, capacity 77Ah, cold test current 780A' is the one to go for?

Think my battery is on its last legs...

I bought the Bosch S5

278mm long, 175mm wide, 190mm high 12V, capacity 77Ah, cold test current 780A

I've had it in the M for the past 12months and its been perfect :)

Bloody good deal, just ordered the Bosch S5008 for £72.50 delivered

Halfrauds wanted £128 :!:

Quick update. Bought the battery as mentioned above, delivered in 4 days, fitted in the snow in 30mins (batteries never come out/go in easy, they always snag!) and the car starts more 'cleanly' I think. The old one was tested at BMW in the summer and it only held a 70% charge, so definite improvement with the new one and I have to say it was a great price.

As an aside, here am I lamenting the failing high streets up and down the country yet I'm only too happy to buy online for an admittedly big saving of 44%... :|

A good deal so why not shop on line.
My battery is coming up to 6 years old and as the car is only out of the garage every two weeks for a quick blast I've noticed the engine seems to be turning over slightly slower. I will be ordering one of these shortly I think.

Me too, exactly the same and putting it down to lack of use.

Had been thinking about this thread but I think if I replace it now I'll try and get a smaller battery & tidy up the space in the boot a bit.

I remember the american MC thread about this yonks ago, has anyone done it since?

Yeah, it was the guy who called his cars after dragons! Called mine mother-in-law ha!!

He fitted a lighter, smaller battery to save weight. He was obsessive about shedding weight to the car. Didn't seem to cause him any issues as far as I can remember

guys just to pre-warn you fitting a light-weight battery/lower amp rating in this car causes issues imo..... ive had one for a while.... yes i know it doesnt get lots of use but its kept on trickle charge when not in use, but im just being honest and giving my feedback, the car needs to be registered to the "new" battery you choose, the z4m has a smart alternator that stops charging @ a certain level, this is set via the registering process ive already mentioned, otherwise our car will be overcharging your new lightweight smaller battery...... ask me how i know????? if you can get a battery with the same output your cool, but find one with a lower rating your car will be overcharging it and frying it......

The stock AGM batteries are expensive but very good when kept charged up, they cant leak and are commonly used in the marine industry due to their sturdy nature, they can also take being discharged and still be charged up and used fine..... They are very good batteries imo.. and in this case i personally would stick to the stock item, hell my stock agm battery is still in my garage showing a solid charge after all these years (kept on trickle charge)......

if anyone doubts what i say drop EAS tuning a line and they will tell you exactly the same as i have, they supply lightweight battery enclosures and braille batteries specifically for the z4m.

If the bosch item is the same rating as the stock unit, no issues, its just units with a lower rating, usually "lightweight" items.

I also thought the AGM battery is essential as it is a sealed unit with no vent to spill inside the car... you down want battery vapours getting back into the cabin :)

Is there an easy way to check the capacity and condition of the stock battery? last time I tried to take a look at it the battery box defeated me and I left it alone in the end.

the AGM is vented, but its only an overcharge vent...... once the unit is overcharged for any reason it will vent gas..... This is one of the few vehicles that i would personally leave the stock battery in place..... my smaller lightweight unit was fried in one season from the overcharging, i have to leave it constantly on trickle charge now otherwise its flat as a pancake in a day...... i will be purchasing a new AGM stock battery soon.......
