Cars I wanted in the late 80’s & mid 90’s.

Those of us of a certain age will probably have craved for, and possibly owned, some of the following cars of the late 80’s / early 90’s. Alas, they were all just too rich for my pocket, especially factoring in the sky high insurance premiums back then. This wasn’t a wish list (which would have included the usual 911’s, Lotus’s, Ferrari’s etc.) this was more of a ‘can I justify spending that much’ list:

Golf 2.8 VR6 (1991), Corrado 2.9 VR6 (1992), Sierra RS Cosworth (1988), Escort RS Cosworth (1992), Toyota Celica GT4 (ST185 - 1989), Audi S2 2.2T Quattro (1991), BMW 325i Sport (E30 – 1986), BMW M3 (E30 – 1988), Porsche 944 2.7 (1988), Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo (1993), Mazda RX7 Turbo (1989).

I was in my late 20’s / early 30’s, married with a baby, and driving a Sierra 1.8 followed by a Cavalier SRi :( The Cavalier ticked all the ‘family friendly’ boxes being a 5 door hatchback with affordable insurance, but also had the bonus of a sporty image (it was black with red piping and had a boot spoiler). A few years later I progressed to an Astra GTE 16v which gave me the quickest straight-line acceleration I could afford at around 7 secs, but cornered like Sh*t  However, I still longed after one of those other beasts.

I know that was 25 years ago, but nevertheless I still smile at the fact my Zed has more horses and hits 60 quicker (or matches) those particular cars I yearned for in that golden era of hot hatches and fast turbos :)

I yearned for a 944 S2 when I was young and driving a Nova 1.3 SR. I ticked that box a few years ago with a (rather tatty) blue 944 S2.

My coupe ticks all the same boxes but with better looks, better interior and more power

Never owned a Cavalier, owned an Astra sport 1.8.16v same engine, peice of cr##p car. Best car I owned way back when, was a Mk1 Primera 2.0 16v. Handled like a dream. You could threw it sideways, under perfect control, around every corner, with just a tiny lift. :driving:

Loving your list, many would have if I could have cars on there. Nissan Pulsar was another.

The first 5 were "on my list" (I was a teenager so couldn't drive), along with the last two. Still secretly want a Cosworth today...the whale tailed variety

+1.
Would love a red Escort Cos on 18 Rondells and twin morrette lights, 6 pot AP's and carbon engine bling. :driving:

I had a Golf VR6
2 Sierra cosworths
Had every generation of Toyoya GT4
Had 2 E30 325 sports
Had a 944 but it was a 3.0
Went to buy an Audi S2... It was dragon green.. Just couldn't come to a deal with the guy... :(

I always wanted an Escort Mexico Mk1.... Never had one though... Had a few Rs2000's and sports and a Harrier.

I did get an intergrale after wanting one for years, and 911 was always a dream... Had 3 of them in the end... More than enough to sour the palette ..

Always wanted an Alfa 156 but never did, e46 M3 too...
Also wanted a calibra and 16v Astra..

Growing up I always loved 911's (who didn't) and for some reason I liked Starions and MR2's

Ah, yes the Mitsubishi Starion Turbo (1985) - another of my favourites, thanks for jogging the memory DPG.

As a teenager, I wanted a TVR Griffith, and Elise Mk1, and then thought the Elise Mk2 was the coolest thing I had seen. I was very lucky enough to be driving a TVR S3 at 21, a Griffith at 23, a MK1 Elise at 25 and a Mk2 at 28. Then I switched to bikes. The only BMW I ever liked was the Z4C which I saw in 2006 and thought it was the best shaped coupe I'd seen.

I am extremely luck (or foolish) to have been able to afford my dream cars and bikes before I hit 35.

Apart from the Lambo Diablo, XJ 220 and Viper. Although I was really close to a Viper, until I realised the SRT-10 had no roof, or windows, but then that would have been a very silly buy.

Sadly now growing up has taken over and the only cars I'd really like to own and can realistically aspire to are the Alfa 4CC or Exige SC. I have got a soft spot for the old CRX and the AE86 though...

Can't believe you owned virtually all the cars on my list! Lucky fella

First car was a Siroocco Storm back in the early 80's, very fast and tough as I found out when a Sierra decided to indicate right but turn left across me; end result was a written off Sierra, my damage was a single cracked headlight.
Then progressed to a 205 GTi when they first came out, flaky build but superbly fast and sure-footed.
A Renault 19 16v followed the 205, then a Celica until I got a S1 Elise which I kept for 10 years as a daily driver.
The short-comings of the Elise finally got to me and I sold it for more than I paid for it and bought the Zed. :)

No way :o It would be quicker to list the 80's/90's muscle cars that you didn't own :D

I worked at Mitsubishi at the time too...

It was an F plate and ended with AWG..

Was a great car, very quick and sounded a treat.
I was well into the Japanese cars around that time...
Impreza, Evo, 300ZX TT.... I always wanted a 3000GT but never managed to buy one..

Never understood the Golf thing tbh (even in GTi form) as they just looked like family cars. I did have a couple of Capris in the late 80s early 90s though, the second one being a 2.8 injection which was a great car to drive.
