.. not in the Z.

- but i'm thinking of flying to Olso, hiring a 4 wheel drive and doing a winter road trip in Norway (or Sweden via Stockholm). Anyone got any experience of whats best, what to do? Will provably be going in Feb, but booking very soon.

thanks.

Fairly sure there's someone on here that works in Norway.I think his Avatar is a cartoon version of Marilyn Manson but can't remember
their name.
Not much help but at least it gave you a wee bump

I'm in Oslo now for a couple of days with work. I will ask around in the office tomorrow

Excellent, thanks. There is decent info online, but personal recommendations are great, thsnks.

A few years back I did the Tour of Sweden in a Jeep. In essence drove from Ystad in the extreme South to Kiruna in the Artic competing/messing around on off road sites each day and then in the late morning/afternoon driving the next 100 or so miles North to the next overnight camp or stopover. Off roaders from all over Europe do it and it's a like a rolling party with amazing group spirit.

Started the tour by ferry ride to Denmark and drove across country to Sweden loaded with spares and camping gear.

Probably the best road trip I've ever done.

Can look up details if it interests you.

Thanks. Interesting to hear. My heart is not set, so either Sweden or Norway. I need to do my research, but sounds good so far.

The Norway road trip .........
Definitely worth doing .......

Main thing you need to know is .......... speed limits :D .....
They do not mess about, if it says 70, you drive 65 and so on ........
Minor infractions, ie 68 in a 60 will get you a 300 pound fine, and it escalates quickly.
...... and being in the middle of nowhere on top of a mountain means nothing :D they are always where you least expect them.

The only real motorways are around Oslo ...... so any trip will take time.

From Oslo you can head west towards Stavanger then take the E39 coast road all the way North, great trip but involves lots of ferries, average cost is 20 quid a crossing - can mount up really quickly.
An alternative is Oslo to Elverum, then the mountain road to Trondheim ...... awesome drive, but watch your speed, not just speed traps but quite often the odd moose lolol.

A good trip is Oslo / Elverum / Trondheim / then east to Sweden via Are ..... if its winter pretty much guaranteed snow.

Lots of toll roads - some register your plate, some are manual ........ a rental car will have a transponder in it so tolls will be charged to your credit card - in a private car its a lot cheaper to register your car/credit card at http://www.autopass.no/en/visitors-payment fee's can be up to 50% cheaper that way.

Allow up to 300 quid for tolls / ferries on the average holiday.

Don't bother with Oslo - its completely over run with errrrrrrr imported undesirables who have one goal, robbing you :D , its only Oslo though, everywhere is else is pretty cool.

In winter all rentals are fitted with proper Scandic Winter tyres ..... no worries there.

well worth the time.......

If your passing Trondheim there a small village called Hell, its worth visiting the railway station for a photo, as its the only place I've ever been that has a singe saying Welcome to Hell.
