North East Meet - **Confirmed 10th October**

Just a thought: If the meet starts at Sutton Bank, then why not head from there to Castle Howard instead of Helmsley? The road to there (from the A171 west of Helmsley) is a good one (fast and twisty), as is the road from there to Hutton Le Hole. Car clubs often meet at CH, and I can ask them to cordon us off a little section. They have a decent cafe in the courtyard too.

Hi all, i'm in. All the suggested roads are very nice and hopefully at this time of year will be relatively clear of bloody toursist and their caravans.

Might go for a drive this afternoon too - these roads looks great!

I was kind of planning on climbing Snowdon that weekend, but I'm in the mood for another weekend of driving so put me down as a confirmed

I'm afraid I need to place myself on the 'foolishly missing out' list enjoy yourselves fella's :x

Well I'm just back from my reconnoitre, and in summary...

PUDDLE.jpg

... if it's that wet next week, then I suggest we postpone, lots of the roads across the tops were dangerously flooded.

Anyway, assuming we get better weather:

Likes
  • Start point at the top of Sutton bank - On A170 from Thirsk (National Park Visitor Centre - left turning about 100yds after the top of the bank - signposted Cold Kirby) Toilets / Lots of parking / Somewhere to stand under cover / Visitors Centre with Coffee shop opens at 10 if it's damp!
    B1257 North of Helmsley
Moor tops road north from Kirbymoorside to Castleton via Hutton - didn't get to try any neighbouring roads, but they looked good at a distance too.
B1266 & A174 into and out of Sandsend - with views along the bay to Whitby.
Magpie fish & chips in Whitby (Lower Pavillion parking overlooking)

Dislikes
  • Parking prices - £2.20 minimum most places
Toll road through Danby Forest - 30 limit (with a little discretion) cost £7 for about 8 miles. Nice parking / photo opportunities and coffee shop / visitor centre though. What do people think about spending £7?

Now to think through all of the route ideas to include all of those + stops.

Well done Guiseley, do not mind about the toll so much, fish and chips at the Magpie........ happy girl but you might have to book!

Long range forecast for Sunday seems good, so that will be the kiss of death then :(

We went 'take-away' which was fried to order - and sat in the bandstand with the gulls. We did take their tel number, so if we get organised at a rest stop then we could get an order and/or table booked.

Best chippie anywhere? Beats Harry Ramsdens - and that started in Guiseley!

I'm the same, fine with the toll, big yay to the Fish 'n' Chips (almost a Z4 tradition now?)

Screw the weather it'll be a nice drive anyway :)

I'm happy to pay the toll, fish and chips sounds good too. We're not meeting in Hemsley then? Plenty of parking in the town square at 9 30 on a Sunday morning.

If the weather's even remotely similar next week then I will be sitting firmly at the back, my happy combo of Sport Contact 2s and Potenzas just don't like wet roads very much.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D

I'm good with the toll & fish n' chips sounds grand

Yesterday was exceptionally wet, I think it's unlikely to rain like that again but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. The wet does have it's plus points; The second day of the Lakes/Dales meet rained for all it's worth in the morning, but the afternoon (when there were only 7 of us hard-core drivers left!) was some of the best driving ever; a little damp but we went for nearly 40 miles without seeing another car. Brilliant!

If it does piss it down, we'll just have to be a bit more careful is all :)

Updated list (though, I think it's the same as Tony's)...

Happy to meet at Helmsley, but the visitors centre got my vote because of the Toilets and canopy / centre (opens at 10) to huddle in if it's wet!

9.30 arrival for a 10 start OK for you John? You've got the further drive, so happy to go with your shout (although that might put additional pressure on the Mancs to get out of bed earlier too!)

p.s. Fish & Chips were great - and they understood what 'scraps' were too - unlike our friends on the West coast.

Tweed have you got everyone's phone numbers in case of last minute changes? Plus, do you have bluetooth, or should I send my number to all parties as I'll probably have a passenger who can answer for me. I'll put together a route idea and send via PM today / tomorrow.

The back's actually one of the quickest places; Since you have to catch up after getting caught at junctions/lights/behind psychotic-german-campers...

btw, Blue... I did have your number... but pm box got full, so had to delete it a while back... can you resend? pretty pretty pleeeaassse? ;)
