Not a lot of pictures in this, but just want to show how bad Ruby Black can get despite taking lots of care with the wash regime.

The picture shows a close up of the O/S wing edge near to the windscreen (which has been 'corrected'), and the top of the door that hasn't.

you need to stop using that Brillo pad in your bucket... :D
I used only natural 'wiry-haired' brushes with a ginger tint to them :P

I even made sure the gimp suit was properly oiled so that it slid over the car nicely when I applied the wax.

Ouch. How long between corrections was that!?
6 months, and it only looks that bad under artificial lights and close up (that's only about a 6x12" area), it'd never look like that in normal conditions.

I knew I should have gone for grey/silver

how did you correct it? in normal light my bonnet looks ok , but under a street lamp, the entire bonnet is COVERED in swirls :(

Mine was corrected over a year ago and now it looks like it has suffered the homebase "fiver" special its whole life under the street lights. Quite depressing given the time and money I've spent trying to keep it in good nick. Black paint is alot more susceptible to damage than other colours I think, but when it's looking good...nothing else comes close!

Sad fact is that despite power wash, snow foam, special shampoo, two buckets, grit guards, Mongolian lambswool mitt, superfine fluffy towels, patting dry, Zymol carnuba willie wax,etc etc you still end up with swirls after a few months washing.

I think the answer is to never wash the bloody thing, then at least you know your paintwork is pristine under all the dirt :)

I must be lucky as mine is holdin up well despite being washed at least fortnightly. Although I do know that black is a bitch having owned a sapphire black Z before.

I think it's the drying stage where most damage is likely inflicted. That's providing your wash practices are up to scratch. I always pat dry. It takes a bit longer but is worth it.

I use different mits for the lower panels and the rest of the car and never shy to refill both buckets if the rinse water is getting dirty. Clear buckets help to spot that.

After years of black car, the Z4 is my first silver grey, what a difference that makes. Doesn't show up the swirls that are invariably there and even hides dust and dirt. After not cleaning it for two weeks and numerous rain showers, it still looks clean. Only downside is it doesn't give you that feeling of accumplisment when you've spent all day polishing it like black does.

A couple of times a year I get it corrected & detailed by one of a couple of detailers, depending on where I'm working and their calendars.

This time it was Jay from Gleaming Kleen, who came up to Birmingham to do both mine and my mate's cars over one weekend while we partied :P

I agree regarding the drying.

Thats why i use a water filter to final rinse and the just drip dry, seems much better.

Or invest in a teflon cover ... Neither my toledo blue Z nor my silver grey has a single swirl mark, no matter what light.

I have seen the result on a black Z as well, looks really good. Downside is the cost at about £600 or so and it can not be done in the UK so I drove to the continent with both cars to have it done.

The company providing this solution does not operate in the UK, only in various countries on the continent.
