Noob Question on cleaning and roof care

Hi all,

Sorry for the noob question, but having never had a rag top before I want to make sure I get things right! It also the first time I really had a car that I wanted to pamper.

When I bought the car, I was given a two part roof cleaner with instructions, so I happy with what I need to do to look after the roof - Renovo products, are they OK?. I'm more concerned about what extra care I need to take when giving the car its usual wash. Do I have to take any special care with the roof, or do i just try and avoid getting body cleaning products on it? I also assume that using a pressure washer any where near the roof is a real no-no. Do I Snowfoam the roof or not?

Any advice will be very useful, and sorry if this seems a silly question!

Cheers

Sheldon

Hi the cleaner is one of many that should be used when you want to deep clean the top. The only advice I would give you is never use wash wax or car shampoo on it as they have a bleaching effect. Just wash with water and use a soft bristle brush when dry to remove dirt and dust. ( before washing with water ).

Hi, most of the big name roof products have a following on here and will do the job. Typical discussion here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=65798&hilit

The best tip I picked-up from the forum was using a Vax style wet vacuum to remove excess water and lifts a surprising amount of muck even after washing! discussion http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75929

I'd add a few points:
Do as you say and keep the jet washer off it. Some use it (perhaps OK on low pressure and a long way off), but it is fabric
Dry it thoroughly before leaving the roof down for long periods (overnight) to avoid mould
Avoid any scrubbing else you'll fluff the weave
Don't try to seal it. the fabric is porous with waterproof membrane underneath
Stick to the top 3 or 4 products

Ive had 3 E85 roadsters & with all 3 I added black shoe polish to the sealer with good effect .
Also found that lightly working the shiny spots with a green fleece & the fabric cleaner helped fade or remove them
All 3 had at least 80k miles covered & always came up great after just a few hours work (always hoovered first )
