Non run-flats- what’s the backup plan?

Will shortly be swapping out the rear tyres for non-runflats as they are due for replacement.

Had assumed the back up plan would be a can of tyre weld and a pump, but I noticed in the manual it mentions that tyre weld can damage the pressure detector electronics.

Is this a genuine concern? Is there a back up plan that doesn’t involve tyre weld that I should be looking at?

Depends on which tyre pressure monitoring you have. TPMS (sensors in the valves) or FTMS (no sensors in valves).

Ultimately doesn't matter. What you gonna do?.... walk home so you don't ruin a £20 sensor in your wheel?

Have you checked if you have the pressure monitoring valves? or is it monitored through the ABS rings

OP, I carry two motorbike tyre patch kits; the aforementioned ‘rats tails’, and the round mushroom plug. One for each type of puncture. And a pump. The reason for the motorbike type is because they come in a compact format. Amazon, eBay, etc, carry many of those.

It's not a recommendation to mix runflats with non-runflats.

Get all 4 replaced and join your "new" car. It's worth.

I have had a space saver in boot for several years.
Never needed to use it.
Although in early days two nrf tyres had sidewalls ripped by pot hole.
I just drove car home on the rims.
Lucky no damage.

Didn’t realize there were different systems. Is the type dependent upon model/year or something else? It’s a 2012 28i.

Ah, wasn’t aware of that, thanks for the tip.

Assume these are similar to the “bacon strips” I have for my bicycles with tubeless tyres... did not know they were a car thing. Thanks.

If bicycle ‘bacon strips’ are those you take the tyre off the rim and apply them on the inside of the tyre, that will NOT work for the car.

just a 12v compressor for me. if a puncture is leaking air fast enough that it cant be dealt with by just checking the pressures every half hour, its doubtful any tyre gunk or rats tails would help anyways.

if that fails, then its ring roadside assistance. though, in 15 years of driving i've never been stranded by the side of the road because of a puncture.

Hi, no, the bicycle bacon strips are narrow pieces of special “stuff” that you push through a hole in the tyre from the outside with a tool and then trim off. They seal the hole (generally though with the aid of sealant you already have in the tubeless tyre)

I believe the valve pressure monitoring came in around 2013/14 but not 100% sure, if you can’t see the actual pressures in the idrive then I suspect it’s done through the ABS rings and wheel speeds.

Just as an aside. I put Pirellii PZero Run flats on my car. The difference between these and the Bridgestones that were on prior is nothing less than astonishing. I don't think you need to use RFT anymore.

I’ve had car and bike tyres punctures patched with mushroom plugs and rats tails that lasted thousands of miles. Obviously not every puncture is patchable.

The Pirellii PZero Run flats option seems to be a good compromise and certainly the route I will be taking when the time comes to change
