Non - RFT tyres

I know it's a bit of a waste-post, but i'm doing it anyway... :poke:
Have replaced the front RE050A RFT tyres for Michelin PSS non-RFT...

...what a massive difference non-RFT tyres makes!!!! It's turned the car from a bone shaker to a decent cruiser!! Can't wait until the rear RE050's wear out now!!!

If anyone else is in two minds about it.... DO IT!!

Agree its well worth doing  I have read its worth while to swap all four at the same time though and not mix run flats with normal tyres, I have wanted to change run flats on the BMW`s I have had for years but never seemed to get to the stage where all four needed changing at the same time but have been fortunate that all four needed doing on the 6 series and its made an incredible difference.

Whoever came up with the idea of run flats needs a kick in the teeth!

Couldn't agree more for me it was a change to Vredstein Ultrac Vorti's like night and day. I would seriously consider changing the rears not sure its a good idea to mix.

I failed my MOT as the fronts had worn through on the inside edges :(

So I got four new tyres and took the plunge to non rft. I got Continentals. Much, much better. It's still firm (M-suspension and 19" wheels!) but the harshness over cats-eyes and surface changes is gone. I'd definitely recommend switching

Where do you guys get your Michelin Pilot Super Sports from? And what do you do regarding a puncture; can of gunk or BMW mobility kit?

I ran run flats on the front & non rfts on the rear of our old 335d for a year without any problems what's so ever. Granted changing all would be better, but sometimes it's down to cost.

Agreed - can't afford another £350 on rear tyres - especially as they've not been on the car for 6months yet.
I'd like to think that the traction control / VSA would assist in the management of differing front and rear tyres.

I specced MPSS on the M135i and wished I'd gone for the no cost option runflats now. Runflats are fine so long as you have adaptive suspension fitted.

They were harsh when I had them on the Z4 but it didn't have the adaptive.

Tim.

I have adaptive on my Z4 and I still found the RFT unbearable. I do have 19" wheels so that makes it all a little worse. Even the MPSS with adaptive suspension is a little hard.

MPSS on an 18" wheel with adaptive suspension would be ideal.

I went for 265 rear profile and the increase in grip over the original RFT with a 255 profile is brilliant.

Tim you made the right decision speccing the Mss. Even with adaptive suspension the rfts are junk :(
Iam still torturing myself with the Bridgestone's ! It's only £620 for the Michelins but it's the principle only done 4k miles :(

They're harsh with adaptive suspension & also the car loves to skip over anything vaguely bump shaped on the road.

Drove a new 320d on runflats and it wasn't terrible. But that was on 17" wheels and still had more road noise than normal tyres.

The skipping sensation that RFTs give when combined with big wheels and rough surfaces is quite scary.

I had run flats on my E85 and they were really bad and when I changed them it did transform the car but now I have an E89 on run flats and I know everyone says they are still awful but to me they feel absolutely fine I don't have an issue with them at all, I just don't notice any problems with them but the car handles well and drives well and feels totally different to how my E85 felt as they did make the car handle badly and felt very skittish bordering on scary!

On my 1 series I started off thinking RFT tyres were fine, I then moved to non-RFT (winter) tyres. They were noticeably more comfortable & quieter, so I went for non-RFT summer tyres. When I sold the car back to a dealership I put the OE RFT tyres, they were so bad that I stopped the car to work out what was broken, also I was going round corners at 3/4 the speed & finding the car moving about.

here are my thoughts on 255/35R18 RFT v's 235/40R18 non-RFT winter tyres on the rear of my 35iS

I had 17 inch with std rft tyres, they were awful so fitted Goodyears which seemed very good.
Then bought a set of 18 inch with std rft and they seem as good as the Goodyears so far and as quiet.
