Non Garaging the Z

How do,

I'm getting a Z4 soonish (not had enough luck to find the right one yet) and wondering how many people dont garage there Z? I'm not planning on garaging mine and wonder if it will bee too rough on the roof in winter. (so much so that i think i may buy a hardtop for it.

Whats the concensus?

Ginge

I don't have that problem as I've got a coupe, but I'd just get outdoor cover for it (full or roof only).

I'm not planning on garaging mine in winter. I've had a couple Boxsters in the past and they were fine living outdoors. I may get one of these though http://www.roadstersolutions.com/page62.html as a full cover would be too much hassle to take on and off all the time, plus there is a danger of scratching the paintwork with some covers.

I've had mine a few years now and don't garage it.

No problems at all.

What are you worried about WRT the roof?

I just try and ensure there's no debris on it that could go and block the drain holes.

Not sure really!?! Not hard a ragtop before so not sure of whats best or not! Plus living 'upt north' tis guaranteed some inclement weather at best!

A roof cover may be a good idea i suppose.

Cheers guys

oem full cover is the business. use it if parking up for more than 24 hours as parking spot is under a tree.

Cheers guys not sure I have the patience to put a cover on every night tho. Then again, I cant think of much worse than cleaning bird kak off the fabric!!!!

My previous Z4 I had for three years parked on drive with no problems. My replacement is parked on drive as well. I even used it during the winter we had with no problems (apart from being rear wheel drive with no winter wheels. :)

A Hardtop in the winter months will provide peace of mind for those softtop drainage holes

I had a Saab cabrio for 3 years and no problems in all weathers.

I used Autoglym soft top cleaner now & then to freshen up

Enjoy ;-)

Cheers Ranski, I would like one I think, depends how tight funds get whence i have purchased the car. By the way, wtf are you doing in your prof pic????

Wills, from what I read, its a good idea to clean thoroughly and use protective stuff twice a year. that sound about right?

From memory I washed my roof every month or so, and then used an Auto Glym protective spray (beads rainwater etc) twice a year.

The Auto Glym roof cleaner really brought it up well. Infact if you're passing I have 3/4 spray bottle still left which you're welcome to have.

Ok, wash every month. phew, this z4'ing is going to be tough, hehe. Actually i get down the vallys every now and again (the missus) so you never know, might take you up on that!

Only issue is if you have big overhanging trees coz...

Problem 1 = May / June when the sap rises all the cars get covered in their slime

Problem 2 = big trees = natural bird perch = poo = rag top's worst enemy

Otherwise mine's been bomb proof in the couple of recent storms which after owning a couple of other convertables find unbelievable

I have both oem covers, full and tarpaulin (which just covers the roof)

I put the full on if away for a week or longer because if it gets a load of bird s**t on it, nobody will clean it in my absence. You have to give it a good clean and dry first though to get rid of any fine stuff on the body. The cover will move a little. I just give it a good rinse and a heavy wax shampoo, let it dry then put the cover on.

For shorter periods, the tarpaulin is great. Its very quick to fit and covers the soft top and drain holes. I think its quite good to stop the expensive to replace soft top deteriorating due to sun and everything else.

i have a coupe so no problems but if I had a ragtop I would not be concerned at all, if there should be a very heavy/deep snow fall I would clear the bulk off the roof, otherwise there should be no problems

I have had a softtop for over 4 years (S2K for 2.5 years and the Z for 1.5 years) and never garaged either of them with no issues... even in the last few winters with crazy amounts of snow.

But i now have a full car cover for my Z.... as it only gets uses 2 weekends a month...

Only prob with the car cover is that the car has to b e clean before using it.
