Nokia N8-00, useless bloody thing (at the moment)

For some rerason I was desperate not to have a iPhone and decided to stick with Nokia and buy their latest smart phone the N8.

I odered it from Nokia's website so as to get a network free phone and looked forward to playing with it when I got home almost as much driving the Zed, but not as much as other things but that's for somewhere else, Oooer Matron.

Anyway..... big big disappoitment the phone is currently unusable as it turns itself on and off whenever you try to do anything with it. I have spoken to Nokia and tried resetting the phone to no avail. The only option open to me now is to take the phone to a Nokia repair centre and have the wiped clean and all the software reloaded. If that doesn't work I will be looking for a refund from Nokia as it would appear to be quite a common problem having now looked at a few forums (I pre-ordered the phone before its general release).

I truly hope they get it working as in the moments it actually allows me to do things I really like it and find it quite intuitive in its use especially if you are familiar with other Nokia smartphones.

Anywhere here's hoping.

I think Nokia has slipped a bit. I have an XC60. I loathe it. It is flimsy, battery time is poor and often will not charge properly. I avoided the iPhone as I didn't want to get sucked in with all the hype, but having 2nd thoughts now.

Samsung Galaxay or HTC Desire are probably the best non-iPhone options if you want to avoid the Apple stuff and can get shot of your Nokia Richard...

I've not had a Nokia for years (last was a 7210 I think), then went onto Sony Ericsson's (C902 is still a great handset IMO) until they lost the plot too, and am now on my second Samsung.

I've got the N8, They only problem I had with mine was I couldn't send picture messages but got that sorted without any problems and it's been 100% since then. The biggest reason for getting it was the 12mp camera but it has loads of good features.

Hope you get it sorted

Ah - so glad I just picked up the iphone4 then

Historically hated Appple and their overpriced products, but this is simply amazing Vs my prior Blackberry Storm

Synced straight to both Z4 and X5 so happy days now I have email working correctly and a load of amusing free apps to play with

Sounds like a Volvo :P

Like others i didnt go with the flow with having an iphone, but it seems to set the benchmark in the smartphone sector. So went for the HTC HD2 (Windows 65) Had an issue with some apps not loading, and problems syncing it with my laptop. But its great for web surfing.

apple phones as so bloomin big, thats what put me off

Big? iphone4 is tiny compared with some these days.

Guess the compromise on phones is how can they have a big enough screen to do all the surfing/app stuff and still be small enough to be phone.

Just been pick to pick up my expensive doorstop from the Nokia repair centre, inserted the SIM card, turned it on, made a phone call and within 30 secs it's Hello....hello.....hello. Bugger the damm thing has turned off again. Straight back in to the repair centre and left it with them to return the piece of junk to Nokia.

Have just got off the phone with Nokia after telling them I want a replacement handset and not a repair on what to me is a fundamentally floored unit, so we'll have to wait and see what happens, knowing my luck I'll be off with work before a new one turns up and it will be another three months before I find whether it works or not.

Well got the pice of junk back from Nokia, its been repaired and tested sir, I think I asked if Kermit the frog had done the test as within 2 minutes of me turning it on it switched off again, and continued to do every couple of minutes until I turned it off.

Nokia are saying I cant have a replacement because they need to try and repair it 3 times I told them I have no confidence in them being able to repair it and that I'm currently overseas (picked the useless thing up on the way to the airport) and will not return for 3 weeks at which point I will be home for about a week before going off again for 8 weeks, by the time I return assuming the piece of sh1t still doesn't work I will have had it for nearly 6 months and not been unable to make so much as a single phone call on it, and they think that is acceptable.

I will never by a Nokia again and that is despite all but 2 phones I have owned to date being Nokia's going back to the original Nokia Orange in 199 something.

Take my advice by some fruit instead. :headbang:

Thats all bad news. I just got a N8 this week and all OK up to now, but after your problems I am now hopping for the best.

Don't buy fruit, but something with Android

Your tale sounds very much like mine... Bought handset, all fine for 5 months then refused to accept incoming calls. Returned to T-mobile store you sent it off to repair centre. Over the next 8-week period it went back and forward between the repair centre and the store FIVE EFFING TIMES, each time apparently having been fixed but each time not actually fixed in the least. I lost the plot with them, told the store I wanted a replacement handset instead of mine being fixed, they offered new INTERNALS in my handset housing which I accepted. "My" phone was returned to me, except it wasn't even my casing - this one had been dropped more times than an English cricket ball and was absolutely wrecked. I sent off a nasty email to T-Mobile's head of customer service - received a call within 45mins offering me a replacement handset.

To top it off they sent me a handset worth £450 instead of my original crappy one worth <£200. Result.

So my advice is to kick off with the head of customer care / MD / etc. Usually a bit of snouting around online should bring up their contact details.

Did that today, I'm expecting a phone call form the department head within the next 48 hours (seriously), but my call is important to them and they thank me for my patience in allowing them to do nothing:thumbsdown:

had similar... with a \nokia N70 a few years back.... back to the store for repair hell Ive forgotten how manhy times...

finally they came back with a lame excuse of no aerial in the phone and accused me of taking it out!

Had to write a very stroppy letter to the MD of phones4u and copied in trading standards and ofcom (dont who the relevant people are now)... result new phone of my choice :D

but like you I wont be getting another Nokia :(

just had a call from Nokia, it seems I won't be getting a call from a supervisor afterall, he has after looking into my case decided to replace my phone, why they couldn't do that a month ago I'll never know.
So when I get home I get what will hopefully be a working phone, that said my existing has stayed on for a whole 2 minute phone call now  , but then switched off as I hung up

fingers crossed mine is still working and has been fine since i got it.............................tempting fate here i think :?
