Noisy Starter Motor

Hi, I potentially have an issue with my starter motor on my 2.2 Z4 (or potentially not depending on wider opinion)

I’ve had the car for 2 years now and never had an issue with it starting, even in the cold weather, which is great. The thing is the noise it makes when it’s starting. There are no grinding or clicking noises, just the cranking noise you would expect when a car starts….just magnified by about 10. Like I say, there are no issues getting it going, it just wakes up the street when I do 😂😂

Any ideas, I am hoping it’s just a case of a new starter motor but I don’t want to go through the headache of changing it if it’s not going resolve the issue…

Starters are known to fail randomly but I've never heard of one making a noise like that before. I'd swap it anyhow if it was mine.

Thanks Rockhopper, i thought as much. Time to decide whether or not to dismantle the air intake manifold....

BMW TIS instructions

Not the intake manifold.
Note:

All the tasks can be performed from above.

Installation:
Tightening torque 12 41 4AZ .

Release nut (2) and remove battery positive leads from starter motor.

I paid someone to do mine as I didn't have the time. He took the manifold off but if you have long fingers and can work by feel you can do it from underneath the manifold.

Thanks all, I will give it a go :D
Battery off first as you are blindly waving a spanner about by the big fat red feed to the starter.
If not, then you will have to add two extra steps:
1. Apply plaster to back of head after it's smacked into the bonnet.
2. Spend ten minutes searching for the spanner last seen arcing from your hand to the sound of colourful anglo-saxon. :D
